In this article, we discuss how you can update<\/strong> and change your WordPress admin username<\/strong>, as this can be a great security measure to help prevent unauthorized access to your WordPress admin dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a good security measure to help protect against the recent global WordPress wp-login.php brute force attack<\/a> that has been ongoing for the last few days affecting multiple web hosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Update WordPress Admin Username<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Using the steps below, we show you how easy it is to add a new WordPress administrator user<\/em>, delete your old non-secure default admin one<\/em>, and then assign or attribute all of the old user\u2019s posts to your new secure user<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. From the left-hand menu, hover over Users<\/strong>, then click on Add New<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Fill in all of the user fields with new info.Then select Administrator<\/strong> from the Role<\/strong> drop-down. Finally, click on Add New User<\/strong>.

  3. You should now see your new admin user you just created.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. If you are currently logged in as the admin user, hover over Howdy, admin<\/strong> at the top-right.Then click on Log Out<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Now type in your new WordPress admin username and password and click login<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. From the left-hand menu click on Users<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Prior to deleting your old admin user, I\u2019d recommend you backup your WordPress database in cPanel<\/a> just in case. Hover over the old admin<\/strong> user, then click Delete<\/strong>.

    BE CAREFUL!<\/strong> Deleting your old WordPress admin user, without attributing its posts to your new admin user will delete all those posts!<\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Now select your new admin user from the Attribute all posts<\/strong> drop-down, and click on Confirm Deletion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. You should now see the old admin user has been deleted, and you should only be left with the new administrator user, will all the old posts attributed to it.
