In this article we\u2019ll discuss installing the Munin plugin for cPanel\/WHM. With the Munin Server Monitor plugin you can get a quick overview of what your server has been up to with reports on Apache, Disk Usage, Exim, MySQL, Network, Processes, and other System activities.<\/p>\n

To install the Munin plugin yourself this would require root access<\/a> on either your VPS (Virtual Private Server) or dedicated server. Or if you would like for a $25 installation fee we can install the Munin plugin for you.<\/p>\n

If you already have root access on your server, below are the steps needed in order to get Munin installed and to start collecting data.<\/p>\n

Munin plugin error unregistered application<\/h2>\n

Please note in certain cases it\u2019s been reported to us that people are getting the following error in WHM when attempting to install Munin:<\/p>\n

HTTP error 401 cgi\/addon_munin.cgi
\nWHM is configured to disallow execution of unregistered applications when logged in as root or a reseller with the \"all\" ACL.<\/em><\/code><\/p>\n

If this is the case for you, you can folow these steps to still install the Munin plugin:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Login to your server with SSH<\/a> as the root<\/strong> user.<\/li>\n
  2. Create the following folder if it doesn\u2019t exist already with:\n

    mkdir \/var\/cpanel\/apps
    \nchmod 755 \/var\/cpanel\/apps<\/code><\/p><\/li>\n

  3. Next create a configuration file with the (.conf) extension for the Munin plugin.\n

    vi \/var\/cpanel\/apps\/addon_munin.conf<\/code>
    \nPopulate it with this data:<\/p>\n

    # name name=addon_munun
    \n# Service that will serve this app service=whostmgr
    \n# Physical path: \/usr\/local\/cpanel\/3rdparty\/Foo.php
    \n# Literal URL path: $server:$port\/$cpsession\/3rdparty\/Foo.php url=\/cgi\/addon_munin.cgi
    \n# System user to run process as user=root
    \n# Required acls acls=any
    \n# Display name as show in the service ui displayname=addon_munin<\/code><\/p><\/li>\n

  4. Finally register the plugin with WHM by running the following command:\n

    \/usr\/local\/cpanel\/bin\/register_appconfig addon_munin.conf<\/code>
    \nIf you wanted to un-register the plugin you could run:<\/p>\n

    \/usr\/local\/cpanel\/bin\/unregister_appconfig addon_munin.conf<\/code>
    \nIf you\u2019d like to display all the currently registered plugins you can run:<\/p>\n

    \/usr\/local\/cpanel\/bin\/show_appconfig<\/code><\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You should now be able to follow the steps below like normal to install the Munin plugin for WHM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Install the Munin plugin in WHM<\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. Log into WHM<\/a>.<\/li>\n
    2. In the top-left Find<\/strong> box, type in plugins<\/strong>, then click on Manage Plugins<\/strong>.

    3. Place a check beside Munin\u00a0<\/b>in the\u00a0Install and keep updated<\/strong> selection box, then click\u00a0Save<\/strong> at the bottom.

    4. The install process should take about 3-5 minutes, and during that time you don\u2019t want to close your web-browser. When it finishes you\u2019ll see a\u00a0Process Complete<\/strong> message at the bottom of the screen.

    5. Log out, and then back into WHM again.<\/li>\n
    6. In the top-left\u00a0Find<\/strong>\u00a0box, type in\u00a0munin<\/strong>, then click on\u00a0Munin Service Monitor<\/strong>.

    7. Now Munin sets up a cronjob to gather statistics every 5 minutes, so when you first look through your reports there won\u2019t be any data populated into them yet. So typically you\u2019ll want to wait at least 24 hours before you start reviewing the reports.<\/li>\n
    8. You can click on your server\u2019s hostname, in this case\u00a0server.inmotionhosting.com<\/strong> in order to get to a full summary of all the available reports.

Below are some screen shots of the various reports available that you can get to by either scrolling down your main report page, or by clicking on one of the header links such as\u00a0Apache<\/strong> at the top. You can also click on any of the individual report graphs to be taken to the monthly and yearly reports for that category as well:\n
