In this article, we\u2019ll discuss how you can install and configure the ClamAV plugin for cPanel. ClamAV is a popular open-source anti-virus scanner and with the ClamAV plugin, you can allow your cPanel users to scan their e-mails as well as scan their home directories for malicious files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting this installed yourself would require root access<\/a> on either your VPS (Virtual Private Server) or dedicated server, or you can contact support to have us install the ClamAV anti-virus plugin for you for a $25 installation fee.\u00a0You can follow the steps below to learn how to install virus scanner in cPanel and scan your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Install and configure ClamAV plugin in WHM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Log into WHM as the root user<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. In the top-left Find<\/strong> box, type in plugins<\/strong>, then click on Manage Plugins<\/strong>.

  3. Click the Install ClamAV for cPanel<\/strong> button.

    The installation process can take a good amount of time, upwards of 10 minutes, so be patient and don\u2019t close the web browser until it completes. When it finishes you\u2019ll see a \u201cClamAV for cPanel\u201d is now installed<\/em> message at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Log out, and then back into WHM as the root user<\/a> again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. In the top-left\u00a0search<\/em> box, type in clamav<\/b>, then click on\u00a0Configure ClamAV Scanner<\/strong>.

  6. Now you can set the global scan permissions you\u2019d like to set. If you\u2019d simply like to allow any cPanel user to scan any of their stuff you can place a check beside\u00a0Scan Entire Home Directory<\/strong>,\u00a0Scan Mail<\/strong>,\u00a0Scan Public FTP Space<\/strong>, and\u00a0Scan Public Web Space<\/strong>, then click on\u00a0Save<\/strong>.

    Run ClamAV Virus Scan From cPanel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Now login to your cPanel<\/a> to use the virus scanner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Under the Advanced<\/strong> section, click on Virus Scanner<\/strong>.

    3. Now to start a new scan, select the type of scan you want, in this example we\u2019re doing\u00a0Scan Entire Home Directory<\/strong>, then click on\u00a0Scan Now<\/strong>.

    4. After the scan is complete there will be a list of infected files in the\u00a0Infected Files: section, click\u00a0OK on the confirmation window that pops up to continue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. In my test, all 3 of the files that were found are coming up for known variants of a PHP mailer or PHP shell, so we can just leave\u00a0the selections in the\u00a0Quarantine<\/strong> column to place these files outside of our\u00a0\/public_html<\/strong> directory so they are not still accessible to the outside world. We could also just outright\u00a0Destroy<\/strong> them, or\u00a0Ignore<\/strong> them by changing our selection to those columns. Then simply click on\u00a0Process Cleanup<\/strong>. You should then see the cleanup process complete page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Now if you use cPanel\u2019s File Manager<\/a>\u00a0you can navigate to the newly created\u00a0quarantine_clamavconnector<\/strong> directory in your home directory to see the quarantined files.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Run ClamAV Scan From Console (SSH)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      1. Login to your server via SSH<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Run the following command to scan the entire\u00a0\/home\/userna5\/public_html<\/strong> directory:
        clamscan -ri \/home\/userna5\/public_html<\/pre> 
        The <\/span>r<\/strong> flag is for recursive, and the <\/span>i<\/strong> flag is to only show infected files. You should end up with a listing of any infected files that were found such as:<\/span><\/p>
