In this article we\u2019ll talk about using private lists in phpList. A private list can be used internally to help funnel or control your users into more specialized lists, and users won\u2019t be able to choose to subscribe to a private list on their own.<\/p>\n

A public list would be one that you create and have a subscribe page setup for, so that any users can subscribe themselves to the list.<\/p>\n

For this example we\u2019ll be creating a private list called Sales<\/strong>, as we\u2019re going to use this private list to store all of our users that have been subscribing to our public lists, that we think we might be able to convert into sales based on their interests.<\/p>\n

Create a new private list in phpList<\/h2>\n

You can follow the steps below in order to create a private list. The option that makes it private is by not setting the list to active.<\/p>\n

  1. Login to your phpList admin dashboard<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. From the right-hand menu, click on lists<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. \"click<\/a>\n
    <\/div>\n

    Click on the add a list<\/strong> link at the bottom of the page.<\/p><\/li>\n

  4. \"fill<\/a>\n
    <\/div>\n

    Fill in the details for your new list, in this case we used: <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
    List name:<\/th>\nSales<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Check this box to make this list active<\/th>\nUn-checked<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Order for listing<\/th>\n3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Owner<\/th>\nadmin<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    List description<\/th>\nDeals and sales.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

    Click on Save<\/strong> at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Copy user from public to private list<\/h2>\n

    Now that you have a private list created, you\u2019ll want to learn how to copy users from your public lists, into the new private list.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Login to your phpList admin dashboard<\/a>.<\/li>\n
    2. From the right-hand menu, click on lists<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    3. \"click-on-view-members\"<\/a>\n
      <\/div>\n

      Click on view members<\/strong> beside one of your active public lists.<\/p><\/li>\n

    4. You can now click on any of the members of that list to view the full information for that user, and use your browser\u2019s back<\/strong> button to get back to the list of users. In this case I\u2019ve looked at each of my 5 users, and noticed that one of my users user005@example.com<\/strong> entered Computers<\/strong> as their interests.\n

      In this example I\u2019ll pretend I\u2019m selling computer parts. Now that we have a user that\u2019s already verified interest in our general public weekly newsletter, and we know that they\u2019re interested in computers, we can add them to our private Sales<\/strong> list. This way we can target only users that we\u2019re trying to possibly sell stuff to.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    5. \"tag<\/a>\n

      You\u2019ll want to tag the user005@example.com<\/strong> user by placing a checkmark in the tag<\/strong> column beside the user. <\/p>\n

      Under the What to do with \u201cTagged\u201d users:<\/strong> section, select Copy<\/strong>, and select our Sales<\/strong> list from the drop-down.<\/p>\n

      Then at the bottom of the page click on do it<\/strong><\/p>\n

      You should then see a success message that the tagged users were copied. \"1-users-were-copied-to-sales\"<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
