After learning how to create a MediaWiki page<\/a>, you can organize your pages into namespaces. Namespaces<\/strong> in MediaWiki are similar to categories in that when you create pages and they can be stored in certain page locations. For example, You can have \u201cHow to?<\/em>\u201d pages stored in the \u201cHelp<\/em>\u201d namespace, or you can have discussions stored in the \u201cTalk<\/em>\u201d namespace.<\/p>\n

The image to the right shows the available namespaces that are built into MediaWiki. Most of your MediaWiki pages will go into the \u201cMediaWiki<\/em>\u201d Namespace. This article will explain what each namespace is for and how to create a \u201cHelp<\/em>\u201d and \u201cTalk<\/em>\u201d namespace.<\/p>\n

MediaWiki Built-in namespaces<\/span><\/h2>\n

MediaWiki by default has its own built-in namespaces. Two namespaces do not contain any editabe pages, the \u201cSpecial<\/em>\u201d and \u201cMedia<\/em>\u201d namespaces. The rest of the namespaces are premade for organizing the pages. The following table explains what each namespace is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Main<\/strong><\/td>\nThis namespace is for storing the main content of the wiki. its also called the \u201cmain namespace<\/em>\u201d or \u201cmainspace<\/em>\u201c.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Talk<\/strong><\/td>\nThe talk is a part of the \u201cMain<\/em>\u201d namespace. This is reserved for discussions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
User<\/strong><\/td>\nThis namespace us reserved for user pages. This contains user article updates, recent changes, and information about the users wiki contribution.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
User talk<\/strong><\/td>\nThis is a discussion namespace designed for discussions between registered users.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Project<\/strong><\/td>\nThe \u201cProject<\/em>\u201d namespace is designed for development related information about the wiki.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Project talk<\/strong><\/td>\nSimilar to the \u201cProject<\/em>\u201d namespace, this name space will have discussions between users about the development of the site.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
File<\/strong><\/td>\nEvery image, video and other file that is stored in the \u201cMedia<\/em>\u201d namespace will have a page created individually for it. This is the namespace that stores the page that is created for media.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
File talk<\/strong><\/td>\nThis namespace is for discussions related to the File namespace.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
MediaWik<\/strong>i<\/td>\nThe \u201cMediaWiki<\/em>\u201d namespace contains the files such as CSS, skin edit, and other system configuration pages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
MediaWiki talk<\/strong><\/td>\nThis is a discussion namespace for discussing issues with the \u201cMediaWiki<\/em>\u201d namespace.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Template<\/strong><\/td>\nStore wiki templates or text that add functionality to other pages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Template talk<\/strong><\/td>\nDiscussion based of the \u201cTemplate<\/em>\u201d namespace.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Help<\/strong><\/td>\nStores Frequently asked questions or other \u201cHow to?<\/em>\u201d related information.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Help talk<\/strong><\/td>\nThis is for discussing the \u201cHelp<\/em>\u201d namespace pages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Category<\/strong><\/td>\nThis contains lists of pages that are a part of categories.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Category talk<\/strong><\/td>\nDiscussion based off of the \u201cCategory<\/em>\u201d namespace.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Namespaces with no pages<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
Special<\/strong><\/td>\nSpecial pages, reports, and other pages that are a part of the operation of the wiki are a part of this namespace. These are not editable pages.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Media<\/strong><\/td>\nThis namespace is particular for storing files like video and images.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Adding pages to a namespace<\/h2>\n

The following steps will explain how to create a MediaWiki page in a namespace by using the search feature.<\/p>\n

  1. Log into MediaWiki<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. On the left hand side click special pages<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. \"Click<\/a>\n
  4. To create a page in a specific namespace, in the search box to the top right of your mediawiki, type the namespace followed by a colon (:) and then the page name<\/strong>. Like the following:\n

    namespace:Your Page Name<\/p>\n

    In this example, we will create a page in the Help namespace. The following will be searched:<\/p>\n

    Help:FAQ<\/p>\n

    Click Go<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Go back to the special pages and Select All page<\/strong>s from the Lists of pages section. <\/p>\n

    When you look at the Help Namespace you will see your new page listed in the \u201cHelp<\/em>\u201d Namespace section.<\/p>\n

    Creating Talk namespace pages<\/h2>\n

    This section is to give a step by step in how to create a discussion in the Talk namespace through the page Edit Discussion table.<\/p>\n

      Edit a page <\/strong>you want to create a discussion on. <\/p>\n

      Click the discussion tab<\/strong> at the top left.<\/p>\n

      You should see the \u201cCreate Talk page<\/em>\u201d showing the name of the Talk. <\/p>\n

      Add the content<\/strong> for the discussion and Save the page<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Go back to the special pages and Select All pages <\/strong>from the Lists of pages section. <\/p>\n
