Moodle 2.3 allows the administrator to create custom roles and edit the existing default roles for all the users on the site. Roles are a specified preset of permissions that allow users access to certain functions of the Moodle site. This tutorial will outline managing roles, defining roles, and Adding a new role within the Moodle Site administration.<\/p>\n<h3>Managing Roles in the Define Roles section<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"article_list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/edu\/moodle\/moodle-login-administrator\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Click for more information\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Log into the Moodle Dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-1-select.gif\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"577\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-1-select.gif\" class=\"optimized-lcp-image\" alt=\"define-roles-1-select-moodle\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p> Navigate to <strong>Site administration<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Users<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Permissions<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Define roles<\/strong> in the <strong>Settings <\/strong>section on the left. <\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><strong>Important!<\/strong> Keep in mind that <a href=\"\/support\/edu\/moodle\/creating-courses-in-moodle\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Click for more information\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Editing must be turned on<\/a> in the Settings section in order to edit any of these options.<\/p>\n<p> <br style=\"clear: both;\"><\/p><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-2-manage.gif\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"define-roles-2-manage-moodle\" class=\"std_ss\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-2-manage.gif\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 15px 15px;\" title=\"Click here to view the larger image\" width=\"200\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Define Roles<\/strong> page should load with the following preset roles in the list. These can be edited or deleted depending on what the administrator wants to do. Usually these roles are left as their default settings. Below is a brief explaination of the default roles.<br style=\"clear: both;\"> <\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" class=\"article_table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\" style=\"background: #cccccc;\" valign=\"top\">\n<h2 style=\"padding: 2px 0px 2px 5px;\">Default defined roles<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Manager<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">This role allows access to courses in order to modify them.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Course creator<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">This role is for the user that creates the Courses.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Teacher<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">The Teacher role has full permission in the courses like modifying the Courses and grading the students.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Non-editing teacher<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">Similar to a teachers Aid, the courses can be taught and the quizzes graded by this user. Activities cannot be changed with this role.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Student<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">More privileges than a guest; however, nothing can be edited by the Student role.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Guest<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">Guests have the least privileges. Usually the site can be minimally viewed. Courses and other activities are not accessible by the Guest.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Authenticated user<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">Any user that logs into the site is an authenticated user.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Authenticated user on frontpage<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">These users log in but only have access to the Front page.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p> <a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-3-allow.gif\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"define-roles-3-allow-moodle\" class=\"std_ss\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-3-allow.gif\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 15px 15px;\" title=\"Click here to view the larger image\" width=\"200\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p> The Define Roles page will have 4 tabs, <strong>Manage roles<\/strong>, <strong>Allow role assignments<\/strong>, <strong>Allow Role overrides<\/strong>, and <strong>Allow role switches<\/strong>. Roles are a presets of permissions that allow users to access certain functions of the Moodle site.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Allow role assignments<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">This section allows the administrator to assign roles that enable other roles to assign roles.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Allow role overrides<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">Gives a role the ability to over ride other roles.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"168\"><strong>Allow role switches<\/strong><\/td>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\" width=\"945\">Roles can be set to allow them to switch to a different role.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p> <br style=\"clear: both;\"><\/p><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-4-add.gif\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"define-roles-4-add-moodle\" class=\"std_ss\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/edu_moodle_105_define-roles_define-roles-4-add.gif\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 15px 15px;\" title=\"Click here to view the larger image\" width=\"200\"><\/a>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>To create roles other than the default roles, click <strong>Add a new role<\/strong>. The add new role section has a voluminous list of Permission options in the List of Capabilities. Each Permission will have a Warning for the admin to see what Risk will occur if the specific Role is given the Permission . <\/p>\n<p><strong>List of Capabilities:<\/strong> This is an exhaustive list of settings that the role can access. These capabilities consist allow the user to View, Edit, Add, Delete, Import, Export, Grade, and many more options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Show Advanced<\/strong>: Clicking the Show advanced button will allow the role permissions to show <strong>Not Set<\/strong>, <strong>Allow<\/strong>, <strong>Prevent<\/strong>, <strong>Prohibit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risks:<\/strong> These are warnings for the administrator to consider when giving permission to a role.
