In our last tutorial, we gave you a brief introduction about Joomla 3.0 language files<\/a>. If you remember, there are three basic things involved:<\/p>\n

  1. Language<\/strong> (such as English<\/em> or Spanish<\/em>)<\/li>\n
  2. Constant<\/strong> (such as COM_CONTENT_WRITTEN_BY<\/em>)<\/li>\n
  3. Value<\/strong> (such as Written by<\/em> or Excrito por<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Can I modify standard text in Joomla?<\/h2>\n

    If you refer to the screenshot to the right, you can see how Joomla shows the author of an article by displaying under the title, Written by <\/strong>Super User<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    Question:<\/strong>
    What if you didn\u2019t want it to say, Written by<\/em>? What if instead you wanted it to read, Article author<\/em>?<\/p>\n

    You could edit the language file and change Written by <\/em>to <\/strong>Article author<\/em>, but if you upgraded Joomla, you run the risk of losing those changes if any of the language files get overwritten.<\/p>\n

    Answer:<\/strong>
    Joomla 3.0 includes a feature called Language Overrides<\/strong>. Using language overrides allows you to change the Value<\/span> (Written By<\/em>) of a Constant<\/span> (COM_CONTENT_WRITTEN_BY<\/em>) without editing any Language Files<\/span> (language\/en-GB\/en-GB.com_content.ini<\/em>).<\/p>\n

    Using Language Overrides in Joomla 3.0<\/h2>\n

    In the following steps, we\u2019ll show you how to use language overrides. We will change Written by <\/em>to <\/strong>Article Author<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    1. Log into your Joomla 3.0 Admin Dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n
    2. In the top menu<\/em>, click Extensions<\/strong> and then click Language Manager<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. In the left menu<\/em>, click Overrides<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. In the top left of the page<\/em>, click New<\/strong><\/li>\n
    5. Find the Constant or Value to change<\/strong>\n

    6. Change the Text<\/strong>\n

      Under Create a new Override<\/em><\/span> and next to Text<\/em><\/span>, you\u2019ll see the Value. In this case it reads Written by %s<\/em>. Change this to the text your prefer, in our case Article Author: %s<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li>\n

      Click Save<\/strong> in the top left of the page and then test your results! As you can see in the screenshot to the right, the Written by<\/em> text has been changed to Article Author<\/em>. <\/p>\n
