By default, Joomla 2.5<\/strong> uses the php mail() function to send emails<\/strong> from the server. At InMotion Hosting, our servers support the php mail() function, however not all servers have this enabled. If you are not hosting with InMotion Hosting<\/a> and your server does not support the php mail() function, you can configure Joomla to send email using SMTP.<\/p>\n

This method is also a good way to resolve the Could not instantiate mail funtion error<\/a>. Using SMTP to send email requires that you have a valid email address, so if you haven\u2019t already, be sure to create an email address<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Configure Joomla 2.5 to use SMTP<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Log into your Joomla Dashboard<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. In the top menu, hover over Site<\/strong> and then click Global Configuration<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. Click the Server<\/strong> tab<\/li>\n
  4. Under Mail Settings<\/strong>, configure the following settings and then click Save<\/strong>:

    Mailer<\/th>\nSet this to SMTP<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    SMTP Authentication<\/th>\nSet this to Yes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    SMTP Security
    \nSMTP Port<\/th>\n    		If your SMTP server uses SSL, select this option from SMTP Security and then enter the SSL Port required for your SMTP server<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    SMTP Username<\/th>\nEnter your SMTP Username, which generally is your full email address<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    SMTP Password<\/th>\nThis will usually be your email address\u2019 password<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    SMTP Host<\/th>\nIf your email account you\u2019re sending email from is on the same server as your Joomla 2.5 site, use \u201clocalhost\u201d here. Otherwise, enter your SMTP hostname here.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
