This article will focus on the use of the Stripe processor for recurring payments through WooCommerce subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to demonstrate the use of Stripe for recurring payments in WooCommerce, we will step through the installation of the Stripe plugin and the creation of a subscription. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"alert alert-warning\">This article uses the<strong> <\/strong>free<strong> WooCommerce Payments<\/strong> option for support of subscriptions.  There is also a paid extension called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/products\/woocommerce-subscriptions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WooCommerce Subscriptions<\/a><\/strong>.  One of the key differences is that the free version applies a fee for processing a subscription.  The paid version of the extension does not charge a fee for its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will also summarize the requirements for a subscription and show its interface as well as the setup of the Stripe account in WooCommerce to use for processing recurring payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"#stripe-gateway\">Setting Up the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway Plugin<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#api-keys\">Setting Up a Stripe Account to Get Your API Keys<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#api-keys\">Setting Up Stripe in WooCommerce Settings<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/subscription-setup\">Setting Up the Subscription with Recurring Payment<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stripe-gateway\">Setting Up the WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway Plugin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the purpose of this tutorial article, we are using the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/woocommerce-gateway-stripe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin<\/a>. Once the plugin is installed, you will need to set up the Stripe (Credit Card) Payment area in WooCommerce settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li>Go to the <strong>WordPress Plugins<\/strong> page to find and download the plugin.  Search for<em> \u201cWooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway.\u201d<\/em> Once you find the plugin, click on it.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-308\" style=\"width: 500px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stripe-plugin-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br><\/li><li>Click on the <strong>Download<\/strong> button to the right of the screen.  This will give you the zip file required for its installation.<\/li><li>In WordPress, click on <strong>Plugins<\/strong> in the main menu.<\/li><li>Click on <strong>Add New<\/strong>, then click on the button labeled <strong>Upload Plugin<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Upload the zip file that you downloaded earlier.<\/li><li>The list of <strong>Installed Plugins<\/strong> will now list <strong>WooCommerce Stripe Pa<\/strong>yment Gateway. Click on the <strong>Activate <\/strong>button to enable it and complete the plugin installation.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"api-keys\">Setting Up a Stripe Account to get your API Keys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You must create an<a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.stripe.com\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> account<\/a> to use Stripe for credit card processing.  Follow their directions to set up a free account, then verify it through email.   Future logins to the Stripe account will require the use of two-factor authentication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Stripe account opens to a dashboard like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stripe-dashboard-1024x481.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-230\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stripe dashboard contains the API keys and also an area to manage your customers\u2019 payment information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click on <strong>Developers<\/strong> in the top right corner in order to access the API key. This will bring you to the developer\u2019s page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stripe-developers-page-1024x481.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Take note of the API Keys and Webhooks options in the left column. You will need these keys for the Stripe settings in WooCommerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stripe-setup\">Setting Up Stripe in WooCommerce Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stripe-setup\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li>Use the WordPress main menu to go to <strong>WooCommerce Settings<\/strong>.  Then you will need to click on the <strong>Payments<\/strong> tab.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-233\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/woocommerce-settings.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br><\/li><li>Once you\u2019re in the Payments tab look for the link labeled <strong>All payment methods<\/strong>.  Click on this link.<\/li><li>When you see a list of all the Payment options, scroll down until you find<strong> Stripe Process Credit Card with STRIPE<\/strong>.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-234\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stripe-payment-method-1.jpg\" alt=\"Stripe payment method\"><br><\/li><li>Enable this option by clicking on the slider. If you\u2019re not immediately brought to the API keys page, then click on the <strong>Manage<\/strong> button.<\/li><li>You will then get a pop-up window that allows you to enter the keys that were presented to you in your Stripe account. Add the keys from your Stripe account and then click <strong>Save live keys<\/strong>.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-235\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/woocommerce-add-api-webhook.jpg\" alt=\"Add API keys and Webhook from Stripe\"><br><\/li><li>You should then see an overview of your Stripe account settings in WooCommerce.  Make sure to review the settings.  The <strong>Enable Stripe <\/strong>checkbox should be selected.  Scroll down to  review all of your account details <br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-236\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/stripe-account-settings-wc.jpg\" alt=\"Stripe settings within Woocommerce\"><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have finished reviewing your Stripe settings in WooCommerce and they are saved, then you\u2019re ready to process payments through Stripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"subscription\">Setting Up the Subscription<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Subscriptions require that both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/wordpress\/woocommerce\/manage-woocommerce-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">customers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/wordpress\/woocommerce\/managing-woocommerce-products\/\">products<\/a> be properly set up. The payment of the subscription using Stripe requires the customer\u2019s selection when they are invoiced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your payment settings are all set, then the next part of creating a recurring payment in WooCommerce is to have at least one product using a subscription model.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating the Subscription Product<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/wordpress\/woocommerce\/managing-woocommerce-products\/\">Set up a new product, or edit an existing one<\/a>.<\/li><li>The product will have the option of being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/edu\/wordpress\/woocommerce\/managing-woocommerce-products\/\">Simple Subscription or a Variable Subscription<\/a>. In the screenshot below you will see a Simple subscription product.  Make sure to add the subscription information for the product including the subscription cost and frequency of payment.<br><br><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-241\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/simple-subscription-product.jpg\" alt=\"Simple Subscription product\"><br><\/li><li>Click on <strong>Save<\/strong> or <strong>Update<\/strong> in order to save your changes for the product.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"subscription-order\">Working with the Subscription Order<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have subscription products set up, you can create subscription orders that accept recurring payments. There are a few ways that subscription orders can be placed.  They can be done from the storefront or they can be created manually by an administrator.  For the purpose of this tutorial and to demonstrate a subscription order, we will walk through creating a manual order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subscriptions are records in WooCommerce that are used to manage future payments per the subscription product. Here are the steps for manually creating a subscription. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arnelstest.com\/testsprout\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/new-subscription-1024x440.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247\"><figcaption>New subscription order<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"article_list wp-block-list\"><li>Click on <strong>WooCommerce<\/strong> in the WordPress Dashboard main menu, then click on <strong>Subscriptions<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click on <strong>Add Subscription<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select the customer from the drop-down.  Make sure that the subscription is assigned to a customer.  as they will select the payment method. Add a customer if needed.<\/li><li>Click on <strong>Add Item<\/strong> to add a subscription product.<\/li><li>When you finish adding items, make sure to click on the <strong>Recalculate <\/strong>button to get the total charge.<\/li><li>Since this is a recurring payment subscription, click on <strong>Schedule <\/strong>on the right side of the screen. Set up the frequency of payment,  start date, trial end (if there is a trial period), next payment date, end date, and time zone. Since it is a subscription, the payment invoice will repeat based on the set schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This completes the process of adding a recurring payment using Stripe in WooCommerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p>Stripe can process recurring payments using WooCommerce and its subscription options.  There are a number of solutions that can be implemented, but the free version can work to an extent with the proper setup and management.
