Our goal is to explain each tool and then recommend when to use one tool over the other.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#website\">Website Performance Measurement Tools<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#pagespeed\">PageSpeed Insights<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#gtmetrix\">GTmetrix<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#tool-to-use\">Which Tool Should You Use?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"website\">Website Performance Measurement Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the website performance tools analyzes your website to determine a number of metrics that give you an understanding of how your website is performing. <br><br>Website performance tools also provide recommendations that are used to help improve your site.  For example, if your site has something that is causing it to be slow, then the performance tool will often flag it for you to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of how PageSpeed shows its results:<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"678\" class=\"wp-image-100440\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pagespeed-site-score.jpg\" alt=\"PageSpeed Insight score page\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pagespeed-site-score.jpg 990w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pagespeed-site-score-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/pagespeed-site-score-768x521.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, both tools (PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix) use the same technology to evaluate a website\u2019s performance \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/GoogleChrome\/lighthouse\">Lighthouse<\/a>.\u00a0 Google defines Lighthouse as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/GoogleChrome\/lighthouse\"><em>Lighthouse<\/em><\/a><em> is an open-source, automated tool for improving the quality of web pages. You can run it on a web page, public or requiring authentication. It has audits for performance, accessibility, progressive web apps, SEO, and more.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Each tool uses Lighthouse to test the site and additional methods that are used to provide a score. Both PageSpeed and GTMetrix provide two scores, but they are different.\u00a0Each tool may seem to provide the same information, but there are major differences in how the scores are generated by each service.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pagespeed\">PageSpeed Insights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s PageSpeed Insights is a free tool designed to track and measure your website\u2019s performance on desktop and mobile devices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It analyzes the content on your website by running it through the Lighthouse application with simulated environments and using real-world data. Real-world data is gathered through <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/docs\/crux\/methodology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CrUX <\/a>(Chrome User Experience) data if it is available for that website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool then provides you with feedback and recommendations you can use to improve your website speed. These summaries show your average Page Score, the largest areas for improvement across all of your reports, as well as your best and lowest performing pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PageSpeed Insights gives two scores on a scale from 1-100 \u2013 one for mobile and the other for desktop \u2013  which is determined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/blog\/google-lighthouse\/\">Google Lighthouse<\/a>.<br><br>PageSpeed Insights analyzes a site using the following metrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Metric<\/th><th>Description<\/th><th>Weight<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>First Contentful Paint<\/strong><\/td><td>Time measure from when pages starts loading to when any part of the page\u2019s content is rendered to the screen.<\/td><td>10%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Speed Index<\/strong><\/td><td>Measures the speed at which content is displayed during the page load.<\/td><td>25%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Largest Contentful Paint<\/strong><\/td><td>The render time of the largest image or text block of the displayed portion of the page relative to when the page first started loading<\/td><td>25%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Time to Interactive<\/strong><\/td><td>The time it takes for a page to become fully interactive.<\/td><td>10%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Total Blocking Time<\/strong><\/td><td>This is the time measured between the First Contentful Paint and the Time to Interactive.<\/td><td>30%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Cumulative Layout Shift<\/strong><\/td><td>Measures the visual stability of a leading web page.\u00a0 Layout shifts occur when a change suddenly occurs on the page, with no warning.<\/td><td>15%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Google does not publish where its test servers are located, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/thread\/58756818\/where-is-google-s-pagespeed-insights-servers-hosted-is-africa-prejudiced?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">posts in the Google communities<\/a> forums indicate that the PageSpeed appears to be more oriented towards the US. It may also involve real-world data if that data is available for the website being measured. <br><br>The screenshot of the scoring calculator (above) also shows you the weighting of each metric and how it contributes to the overall score.<br><br>It is important to understand <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/docs\/insights\/v5\/about\" target=\"_blank\">how PageSpeed generates the score using Lighthouse<\/a>. PageSpeed Insights creates a score based on both lab and field data.  The lab data is based on simulations, but the field data is based on data collected from real-world user experience.  <br><br>In some cases, there may not be enough data on a newly published website.  This will be indicated at the top of the report when you run it in PSI. Improving these areas of concern will also contribute to improving your overall search engine position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gtmetrix\">GTmetrix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>GTMetrix is another online tool that can be used to measure the performance of your website.\u00a0 It is free to use, but it also provides paid plans that begin at around $11 per month.\u00a0 The different plans allow you several options that include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monitored slots<\/strong> \u2013 ability to monitor different pages of a website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weekly On-demand tests<\/strong> -option to add weekly tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data Retention<\/strong> \u2013 History of performance tests and monitoring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hourly monitoring<\/strong> \u2013 scheduled monitoring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Premium Test Locations<\/strong> \u2013 access to 15 premium <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/locations.html\">global test locations<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile Device Testing<\/strong> \u2013 allows for testing on different specific mobile devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The old version of GTMetrix (before January 2022) used the results from Google\u2019s PageSpeed Insights and Yahoo\u2019s YSlow applications.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/blog\/welcome-to-the-new-gtmetrix-powered-by-lighthouse\/#:~:text=Jan%2031%2C%202022%20%E2%80%93%20Updated%20images,reflect%20new%20PRO%20plan%20pricing.&amp;text=GTmetrix%20is%20now%20powered%20by,Locations%2C%20PRO%20plans%20and%20more.\">current version uses Lighthouse<\/a> to provide the GTmetrix grade including Performance and Structure scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a GTMetrix report on a website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"618\" class=\"wp-image-100443\" style=\"width: 1000px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gtmetrix-test.jpg\" alt=\"GTmetrix performance score\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gtmetrix-test.jpg 1335w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gtmetrix-test-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gtmetrix-test-1024x633.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gtmetrix-test-768x475.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTmetrix uses Lighthouse as a foundation to get the same performance metrics used by PageSpeed Insights.\u00a0 These metrics include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First Contentful Paint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speed Index<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Largest Contentful Paint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time to Interactive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total Blocking Time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cumulative Layout Shift<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It also provides a score based on the structure of the website.  So, you\u2019ll see a letter grade, then two scores.<br><br>There is a major difference in how the tests are run. GTmetrix uses an actual internet browser loading the web page.\u00a0 It also does not use <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/GoogleChrome\/lighthouse\/blob\/master\/docs\/lantern.md\" target=\"_blank\">Lantern <\/a><\/strong>\u2013 an algorithm developed for Lighthouse in order simulate load-behavior.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201csimulated mode\u201d used by Lantern then uses CPU or resource throttling in order to measure against different conditions such as slower CPU, less memory, slower network connects, etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTmetrix uses a method called \u201cobserved mode.\u201d\u00a0 This means that the testing is occurring on a specific device and connection and does not use the gathered data to simulate other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Additionally, with the paid and registered options in GTmetrix, you can change the test location and mobile devices used in testing.\u00a0 Being able to test from a server geographically nearer to your location will produce more realistic results for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix also produces suggestions that will help to improve your site\u2019s performance.\u00a0 You can find them in the Structure tab of your results.\u00a0 Here\u2019s an example of what it may look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/structure-tab-gtmetrix-1024x846.jpg\" alt=\"Structure tab in GTmetrix score\" class=\"wp-image-100444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/structure-tab-gtmetrix-1024x846.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/structure-tab-gtmetrix-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/structure-tab-gtmetrix-768x635.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/structure-tab-gtmetrix.jpg 1044w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tool-to-use\">Which Tool Should You Use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have a good understanding of Google PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix, how do you decide on which tool you should use?\u00a0 Both use Lighthouse API as the core method of obtaining metrics on your website.\u00a0 However, one uses a simulated mode, while the other is customizable with its test locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case Study \u2013 PageSpeed vs. GTMetrix \u2013 Apple.com<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using each tool, we looked to see the difference in the tests and how the results for mobile versus desktop would impact the scoring. This comparison uses a website based in the West Coast of the United States \u2013 Apple.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/example-data-applecom-1024x608.jpg\" alt=\"PageSpeed Insights versus GTMetrix - measuring Apple.com. \" class=\"wp-image-100480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/example-data-applecom-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/example-data-applecom-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/example-data-applecom-768x456.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/example-data-applecom.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 1360px) 876px, (min-width: 960px) calc(61.58vw + 51px), calc(100vw - 80px)\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These results show that Google is far stricter with its emphasis on mobile first websites versus GTMetrix which is using a general mobile device 4G network to run the test comparison. This shows in the lower scores for mobile tests in PageSpeed.  The test does indicate that the desktop test of the site is significantly better than the mobile test in either tool.  Results are fairly consistent for each of the tests, with the widest variation occurring in the PageSpeed graph using mobile.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PageSpeed Insights can test (through simulations) many types of conditions that you will not always be able to select in GTmetrix.\u00a0 However, it cannot be customized for your purposes or location. Due to the variety of test conditions and results that are used to give you a score, PageSpeed is often recommended when you\u2019re working to improve your website\u2019s SEO.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTmetrix results can be modified to include the capture of data over a length of time, and the test location can be changed to suit a foreign-hosted website.\u00a0 Customization options also allow you to select a specific mobile device. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p>GTmetrix is a good solution for a performance measurement tool when you are located close to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/locations.html\" target=\"_blank\">GTmetrix test server location<\/a>. You may also find it better if you need to check performance on a specific mobile device or you need to record test results captured over a period of time. If those conditions match your needs, then GTmetrix may prove to be a more accurate solution.<br><br>In summary, both of these performance tools are good for grading your website. PageSpeed Insights is free and its results are best for SEO because of how its metrics are generated.
