As we continue our series on the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress, we will now show you how to import and export your Yoast SEO settings. This allows you to utilize the same customized SEO settings across multiple WordPress websites, which can save setup time. It can also be helpful when reverting your settings to a former state. First, we will cover exporting your Yoast SEO settings, then show you how to import your settings from Yoast and other SEO plugins.
Export Yoast SEO Settings
- Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
Click SEO then Tools in the navigation menu.
You will then be on the Yoast SEO Tools page, click the Import and Export link.
Click the Export settings tab.
Click the Export your Yoast SEO settings button.
Your browser will then download a backup file titled “yoast-seo-settings-export.zip”. The location of the file will differ based on your browser settings but in my tests it went to the “Downloads” folder.
Import Yoast SEO Settings
On the Yoast SEO–>Tools–>Import and Export page click the Import settings tab.
Click the Choose File button then select your Yoast SEO backup file and click the Open button.
Click the Import settings button.
You are finished when you see a message stating “Settings successfully imported.“
Import from other SEO Plugins
Now that we have walked you through exporting and importing Yoast SEO settings, we will show you how to import your settings from other SEO plugins. In this example, we will import settings from the All in One SEO Pack plugin.
On the Yoast SEO–>Tools–>Import and Export page, open the Import from other SEO plugins tab.
Yoast SEO should automatically detect your other SEO plugins. In the “Step:2 Import” section click the drop-down menu and choose which plugin you want to import settings from then click the Import button.
You should then see a “data successfully imported” message.
- Now review the “metadata” of your Pages and Posts to verify it was imported successfully. You can view this by Editing a Page or Post and scrolling to the bottom.
Yoast SEO recommends running the Setup Wizard on the Yoast SEO General settings page. We will fully cover this topic in an upcoming guide.
Once you have verified the SEO plugin settings have been imported successfully, return to the Yoast SEO–>Tools–>Import and Export–>Import from other SEO plugins page. Select your SEO plugin from the drop-down menu then click the Clean button.
You are finished when you see a “data successfully removed” message.
Congratulations, now you know how to import and export your Yoast SEO settings! In the next guide, we will show you how to Use the File Editor tool in Yoast SEO.
