# How to Manage User Account Settings in OctoberCMS

In this article:

- [Update Account Settings](#account)
- [Account Management](#users)
- [Roles](#roles)
- [Groups](#groups)

[OctoberCMS](/support/email/octobercms-mail-settings/) Administrators are users with elevated privileges. Regardless, users should only have as many permissions as needed. This ensures certain changes are only made by individuals with the expertise to do so responsibly. Then there are settings that affect only that user's experience within the CMS such as language and timezone.

**Warning:** Before continuing below, we recommend you read our article on [logging into OctoberCMS](/support/website/log-into-octobercms/) and configuring mail settings in the case any user is locked out.

Below we cover **OctoberCMS user account management**.

Each user has the ability to edit their preferred name, timezone, language, and editor appearance.

1. In the upper right corner, click your avatar image, then **My account**.
2. Update your Login, Email, First and Last Name, Password, and avatar image.
3. Click **Save and close**.
4. Click your avatar image in the corner, then **Back-end preferences**.
5. Edit your **Locale** language.
6. Change the **Timezone**.
7. Click the **Code editor** tab to adjust its appearance when you're editing the CMS front-end.
8. Click **Save** when done.

### Add Administrator

1. All users should have their own account. This prevents insecure password sharing and makes internal logs more reliable.
2. Click **+ New Administrator**.
3. Fill in the following: Login , Email, Password, and Confirm Password.
4. Select a **role**.
5. Click the **Groups** tab at the top.
6. Check the box beside **Owners** (if applicable) and click the **Permissions** tab.
7. Every permission is set to **Inherit** from the previously selected role by default. Check **Allow** or **Deny** to override or ensure any permission settings regardless of the role.
8. Click **Create and close**.
