# Creating your first Akeeba Backup

Joomla 2.5 has reached its end of life as for 12/31/2014. Please be advised this may be a security risk to your website. You can view more information about the end of life [here](https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla!_CMS_versions).

Now that you’ve **[installed Akeeba Backup](/support/edu/joomla/joomla-2-5/install-akeeba-backup/)** for Joomla 2.5 and [ran the post-installation configuration](/support/edu/joomla/joomla-2-5/akeeba-backup-post-installation-configuration/), you’re now ready to backup your website for the first time with Akeeba.

## How to backup your Joomla 2.5 website using Akeeba Backup

1. [Log into your Joomla 2.5 Dashboard](/support/edu/joomla/joomla-3/how-to-log-in-to-administrative-dashboard/)
2. In the top menu, hover over **Extensions** and click **Akeeba Backup**
3. In the Akeeba Backup menu, click **Backup Now[![click-backup-now](https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_click-backup-now.gif)](/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_click-backup-now.gif) **
4. Choose your **Active Profile**, adjust the **Short description** if you wish, enter a **backup comment** (see screenshot below), and then click **Backup Now![![start-a-new-backup](https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_start-a-new-backup.gif)](/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_start-a-new-backup.gif) **
5. The backup process will begin, and a progress meter will be shown at the bottom of the page.[![akeeba-backup-is-running](https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_akeeba-backup-is-running.gif)](/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_akeeba-backup-is-running.gif) You will receive a message when the backup process has been completed:[![backup-completed-successfully](https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_backup-completed-successfully.gif)](/support/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/edu_joomla25_backup-using-akeeba_backup-completed-successfully.gif)
6. At this point, you have successfully **created a Joomla 2.5 backup using the Akeeba Backup component**! In future tutorials, we’ll show you how to restore your site from this backup.
