# Joomla configuration.php file changes over time

Joomla's configuration.php file has changed quite a bit over time. Some of the changes can cause compatibility concerns with upgrades to newer versions. I came across a change in Joomla 3.2 that has caused [some problems with email](https://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=706&t=825772).

To help others troubleshoot problems *possibly* caused by configuration.php conflicts, I installed every major version of Joomla and examined the configuration file. Here, you can see [example configuration.php files](#config-files) per version of Joomla, and you can also reference [a table that shows every variable included through the years](#changelog).
