PHP Version

I see many questions and answers about how to change the PHP version, but none regarding WHY. Why should I change it and do I have to change it? This is in response to the email I just received about maintenance being performed on my account to give me the ability to change the PHP version. Thanks.

Hello mkorst,

Thank you for your question. The main reason for upgrading the PHP version is to stay up-to-date with the online software that many people use.

For example, online software such as Wordpress or Joomla, requires a specific version of PHP to be installed. If they require php 5.3, then it will not function correctly on a server that only has version 5.2.

PHP 5.3 is conveniently backwards compatible, meaning you can still use PHP 5.2 even if the server has PHP 5.3 installed.

Here is a guide on how to change your version of PHP.
