Changing Nameservers while keeping custom settings

My client wants to host their site on an Inmotion VPS. Their domain name, DNS and email are at another company. They want to keep their email with another company, but transfer the DNS to Inmotion without any downtime.

Can you detail the process in which they can change their DNS/nameservers to point to your VPS without messing up their custom MX records, or any other records?

Thanks,
George

Hello George,

There are two ways to do what you are asking.

1) Keep the DNS Management where it is and simply point the domain's A record to our server. To do that, set the A record for the domain name at the current DNS manager to point to the IP address of the VPS server here. This only affects the domain name and any other records referencing the domain name directly, so the custom MX records should be fine.

2) Before pointing any DNS records, have an exact copy of all DNS records (MX, CNAMEs, etc) made on the VPS server here. After approximately 4-24 hours, then you can simply set the nameservers to point to ours (or custom nameservers if the VPS has them) as normal. This will allow the change to occur seamlessly in regards to the MX records. This method makes us the DNS manager from that point on.

I hope this answers your question. If you have any more questions or information specific to the issue please leave a comment below so we can further assist you.
