Current site with inmotionhosting is ehealthanalytics.net . I am rebranding company to GeroHealth.net. I already have a registered domain name but not with inmotion. I want to keep my current site but change name and access to it. How can I do this and also re-direct emails from old address to new one?
Hello! There are a few steps to this, and what the easiest way to do this will vary depending on if you have a WordPress site or not.
Always make backups before trying anything like this.
In my examples below, I'm going to refer to the original site as Site A and the new site as Site B, but replace with your own sites as relevant.
For a site that isn't a CMS (like a non-WordPress static site), you can simply create a new addon domain for Site B. Rename the site B directory to a temporary name, rename the directory with Site A's files to the correct name for Site B's directory, and then rename the old Site B files to Site A's directory. Now, when you point the domain for Site B at your InMotion Hosting account, the files formerly for Site A will be in the directory for Site B.
If you have a WordPress site, you'll also need to change your Home and Site URL (probably before you move the files), update your WordPress config file to account for the new site data, and you'll likely need to run a search-replace to change all instances of the old domain to the new domain. A lot of people like Velvet Blues for the search-replace, and there are plugins to assist with the whole process as well.
From there, you can set up the old domain as an alias or parked domain so everything going to the old URL is directed to the new URL, and set up email forwarders to send email directed at the old domain to the new one. Don't forget to actually create the email addresses on the new site, though. Hope that helps!
