How many name servers can I add to my domain?

How many name servers may I add to my domain name?  I have only ever seen enough fields to enter five. However, if that's the case, how did I end up with seven name servers this morning?  The sixth and seventh one showed up in the last 24 hours or so.

From whois.com:

Name Servers:
ns.inmotionhosting.com
ns1.linode.com
ns2.inmotionhosting.com
ns2.linode.com
ns3.linode.com
ns4.linode.com
ns5.linode.com

Also, the inmotionhosting DNS server was handing out an incorrect IP address for our domain name.

At the same time, I was unable to access the AMP name server web page.  It came back with:

This page isn’t working secure1.inmotionhosting.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

Once InMotion fixed the Error 500, the InMotion name servers got removed and left me with my original (and correct) five nameservers.

What prevents this issue from happening again?

Hello, and sorry to hear that you're running into this issue with pointing your domain. You're right, that is non-standard behavior. If you recently changed your domain from using the InMotion Hosting nameservers, I can see how propagation time could cause both the old and new nameservers to appear simultaneously if that change was recent.

Normally, though, the system should not add the InMotion nameservers back in. Our system seems to have corrected the error, but if this happens again please contact our live technical support team directly so that they can investigate the issue in the Account Management Panel.
