After creating and deleting a forwarder, I cannot create a mailbox with the same name as the "deleted" forwarder

I created an email forwarder called [email protected]. Subsequently I realized that what I really wanted was an email box with that name, so I deleted the forwarder in cPanel. When I attempt to create a mailbox with the name [email protected]. I get an error message "Error: The requested email address, [email protected], conflicts with the mailing list [email protected]." - However, I already deleted that forwarder, and have verified that it is gone from cPanel.

Is there some kind of housekeeping task I need to perform to clear out the old Forwarder after I delete it? Like emptying the trash?

Problem Resolved with the help of InMotionHosting support. The issue was related to migration from our former hosting company. We had been using an email listserver there called MailMan. I had set up [email protected] as an address managed by MailMan at the former hosting company. MailMan is not offered at InMotionHosting. However, the migration of our content (full site backup and restore) to move from there to here brought along all the MailMan configuration and files.

The result was that I could "create" forwarders using that same address [email protected], but the deletion of them wasn't complete. cPanel would show them as deleted, but because there was leftover MailMan directories for a MailMan managed mailbox [email protected], the forwarder would keep forwarding. Also, we'd get a "local delivery failure" because that old MailMan mailbox was still on the system, but non-deliverable.

Ok, I have additional info. The Forwarder is NOT listed in the Forwarders section of cPanel, but it's still operating. If I send email to that address it is still being forwarded on. Is there some sort of automated housekeeping that I should be aware of? For example, after deleting a forwarder there is a 2 hour delay or the like before it actually is removed?

Glad your issue was resolved.
