How do I make a new domain an addon domain?

My site's down right now b/c of a goDaddy problem, so I thought I'd get that other domain name.  I added it to my CPanel -- but it's outside public_html ... if I go to domain 1 it goes to the domain 2 (the down site) but any links go to "site name expired."

I noticed my Cpanel doesn't say I have an addon domain but that's what I thought I was doing... but it says I have two domains.  How do I need to set up the new domain so people can go to domain 1?  Is it okay to have it outside public_html since it seems to direct things there?

You need to create an addon domain in the cPanel software linked to that domain 1 folder before it will work. Depending on the website software, you may also need to edit website files to ensure links go to the right page.

It's okay to have an addon domain outside of public_html but it isn't recommended for security purposes.
