Pointing a subdomain at external hosting

Hey, I'm trying to figure out how to point a subdomain from InMotion to hosting at uberspace.de where I've setup an instance of Ghost (https://joshafai.uber.space/). I've added this address to my delegation details in the AMP Domain manager.

I've also generated a subdomain in cPanel directing at the ip address: 185.26.156.80 (uberspace) as well as adding them in the Zone manager.

It there something I'm doing wrong perhaps? I'm kinda stumbling along here, so its possible I've been looking in the wrong places :)

Thanks,
Josh

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks for the help, I'm afraid that it's NOT working though.  The address you visited is the uberspace.de hosting which its the address I wish to point at from https://notablog.joshafairhead.com

My setup went as follows:

• Setup ghost/mysql on uberspace.de with the address https://joshafai.uberspace.de

• Log into InMotion hosting

• Go to Domains -> manage domains -> click on my domain (joshafairhead.com) -> point a domain -> add delegation details/name server: joshafai.uber.space in the 5th slot (second and third are netlify pointers for joshafairhead.com).

• Go into cPannel -> subdomains -> add notablong.joshafairhead.com -> manage redirection -> http://185.26.156.80 (my uberspace A address)

• Go to zone editor -> click manage button for joshafairhead.com -> edit zone records for notablog.joshafairhead.com and www.notablog.joshafairhead.com to reflect the A record 185.26.156.80

• Wait 24 hours

Apologies, Josh, I misunderstood the question.

I did a WHOIS lookup on your domain and it looks like you're using a third party DNS for all of your nameservers, aside from the last one you mentioned adding.

DNS1.P06.NSONE.NET

DNS2.P06.NSONE.NET

DNS3.P06.NSONE.NET

DNS4.P06.NSONE.NET

JOSHAFAI.UBER.SPACE

Sorry that I didn't catch that earlier! You will need to set-up everything related to this issue on the DNS you are using. In this case, nothing you change in the zone editor of cPanel will have an effect since your domain is not pointed to our nameservers.

I can explain how you would set up such a redirect on InMotion Servers using InMotion Nameservers, though. Hopefully that will help you figure out the best way to do so on your DNS provider.

Method 1 would be to first create the subdomain in cPanel. Then, simply add a redirect in cPanel or in the .htaccess file. This would send visitors to notablog.joshafairhead.com over to joshafai.uber.space. No IP address or extra DNS required.

Method 2 would involve creating an alias, also known as a parked domain. This means visitors to notablog.joshafairhead.com would actually be viewing joshafai.uber.space while the URL remains that of your subdomain. The issue here is that aliased domains don't work with security certificates, so that's caused them to gradually fall out of favor.

Hope that helps! Of note, here in the support center I'm only able to work with publicly available information and anything you provide directly. If you need someone to get in there and look at the configuration, you'd need to contact our 24/7 Live Support team who can directly connect to the account and see how things are set up.

Hi, Josh! It sounds like you were on the right track: going into cPanel's Zone Editor and updating the subdomain to point to the IP address for the third party hosting is the suggested way to set this up. When I visit the address you supplied, I'm seeing a new Ghost blog, so it looks like everything worked!

If you did not see this change immediately, it's likely you were just experiencing the time difference between making the change and the change fully propagating. Propagation time can take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours, so it's not unusual if you did not see the change right away. If you still aren't seeing the change on your end, please be sure to clear your browser cache for the subdomain. Hope that helped, and let us know if you have any further questions!
