Hi Pat!

The answer to this is going to depend on what type of website you have and where exactly you need to change it. I'm going to write this up as if you have a WordPress site, but if you do not you can omit those steps and do what is appropriate for your site.

First, be sure you have backups of everythingEspecially make sure to grab an extra database backup

Be sure you have purchased the new domain name you want and have it pointed at our nameservers. If you bought the domain from us, we've already taken care of this for you!

For a WordPress site: Update the home and site URL now, while the old site is still easily accessible. This will make the site inaccessible for a few steps.

If you are changing the primary domain on your account: start by following this guide, taking heed of all of the listed warnings. You will not need to move any files.

If this is an addon domain on your account: remove the addon domain listing for the current domain in cPanel, create a new addon domain listing for the new site name, and use file manager to either move the old domain's site files to the new domain's directory or just rename the 'new' directory to something else and rename the 'old' directory to match the file path of the new addon.

For a non-WordPress site: update any configuration files that may exist (this will vary depending on the kind of CMS you are using).

For a WordPress site: You will likely need to do a find-replace on the database to change any links from the original site URL to the new one.

This is one of those things that is quite simple when you get the hang of it, but can be a bit much the first time, so feel free to reach out to our 24/7 Technical Support team if you run into any issues in the process.
