How do I Stop Spam Emails?

About 3 days ago I began receiving spam from mail@(my development site) to my regular email address - about 50 so far. What is the best way to stop these emails and protect against them?

Duplicates 23
Spam pass through not working
I regularly forward spams that make it through Spam Assassin to Knujon, Spamcop and UCE.gov. They, in turn, process them so that the number of spammers is reduced. So far, I have "nailed" almost 20,000 spammers.

Unfortunately, when I try to forward emails which contain bots, etc. I get the following in my network logs: " "** error occurred on SMTP session*** Error occurred while sending the message: 550 information, please see https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/everything-email/550-spam-message".

Worse yet, the message is NOT forwarded to Knujon, Spamcop and UCE.gov - which I'm sure makes spammers very happy. How can I override this filtering by inmotionhosting?

spam getting through that shouldn't
I've been using BoxTrapper and Spam Assassin for sometime ... however, lately I see more spam getting through and it is NOT a white listed email address in BoxTrapper. I tried lowering the score in SpamAssassin but it goes back to the Default 5 score. I've also tried blacklisting or ignore listing the spam sender, however the Ignore list parameters don't take into consideration the new email address formats being used with more "dots" in the address. such as [email protected] so there are no instructions in BoxTrapper of how to handle this and not enough Black List fields in SpamAssassin to add the new spam addresses. SpamAssassin not identifying spam emails
In the last few weeks one of my users has seen a radical increase in email spam. I did some investigating, and all the emails were scored below our threshold of 4. Some of these emails are blatantly, obviously spam, so I used an online utility to read the email (including headers) and give it a SpamAssassin score. The online utility scored these emails way way above how they were scored by the server. Like, 8.8 vs .1 or 10.3 vs .9. What might be causing SpamAssassin to fail, and what can I do about it?
SpamAssassin not filtering spam
Over the last few months we have been receiving a huge amount of spam that SpamAssasin isn't filtering. I think I found the issue in one of the spam message's headers. There is an error:

0.0 URIBL_BLOCKED ADMINISTRATOR NOTICE: The query to URIBL was blocked.
See
http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/DnsBlocklists#dnsbl-block
for more information.
[URIs: doubleclick.net]
-0.0 RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE RBL: Sender listed at http://www.dnswl.org/, no
trust
[66.179.102.32 listed in list.dnswl.org]
0.5 RCVD_IN_SORBS_SPAM RBL: SORBS: sender is a spam source

I think the "The query to URIBL was blocked" error is preventing SpamAssassin from working properly. Is there a solution for this? If not, is there a better spam prevention solution available for our domain?

Thanks,
Howard

How can I stop spammers from using my email server

Wordpress Website contact form submission generated emails are being flagged as High Scoring Spam Not Being Delivered.

Emails are not being received when they are generated by my website's PHP. Specifically from Contact Forms. I set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARK on the Cpanel yesterday and emails are still not being delivered. Messages are being flagged as High Scoring Spam. Want to avoid SMTP. Please help resolve this issue. The email deliverability logs on Cpanel says everything is good but the receiving email host is flagging them. The below information is from before I set up the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

The main issue causing spam points is that the message is not passing SPF:

Rule | Score | Description
BAYES_50 | 0.80 | Bayes spam probability is 40 to 60%
DKIM_SIGNED | 0.10 | Message has a DKIM or DK signature, not necessarily valid
BAYES_50 | 0.80 | Bayes spam probability is 40 to 60%
MIME_HTML_ONLY| 0.10 | Message only has text/html MIME parts
SPF_SOFTFAIL | 1.50 | SPF: sender does not match SPF record (softfail)

My email is landing in my friends, family & client's spam box!

Hi there, I have my domain with InMotion and my emails are landing in friends, family & client's spam, how do i stop this? My email content is not spam, it's just normal communication emails and all of the recipients know me.

I recommend you follow our email authentication guide. And in the DMARC section, use the strictest settings. You may also want to create an email filter deleting email from and to the same email account.

You may be able to add such a warning to the email subject section with cPanel Email Filters as well.

Hello haillie,

Thank you for contacting us about emails from a WordPress form being flagged as spam. This can often be resolved by using SMTP settings (username and password) in WordPress to authenticate with the mail server before sending.

Here is a helpful link to our guide on how to strengthen email Authentication.  It provides details on setting up DKIM, SPF, and DMARC for your domain.

Thank you,

John-Paul

Hello Gregg,

Thank you for contacting us about stopping spammers from using your email server. I first recommend changing the password for that email account. Be sure to use a strong password. Check any contact forms on your sites and mail scripts you are using such as PHPMailer.

You can also review your cPanel Email Logs for additional clues.

Thank you,

John-Paul

Hello Howard,

Sorry for the problem that you're seeing with SpamAssassin. In order for us to verify the issue, we would request that you send the email that has that information in the header that you are reporting. We would then investigate the cause of the message. Please provide us the file and we would be happy to look further into the issue.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

Hello, Thank you for contacting us about SpamAssassin allowing spam through. Our guide SpamAssassin enabled and still getting spam explains some of the reasons why SpamAssassin might be letting through what you consider spam into your email Inbox, and what you can do to try to reduce the amount of spam you have to manually review. Since the online utility you used may have a different method of scoring spam, you may want to also consider submitting an example of a spam email to Live Support so they can look at the actual Spam Assassin score in the server logs. Thank you, John-Paul

Hello Lyle,

Thank you for your question on the spam emails. The reason those emails are not getting through is because they are being flagged by our outbound spam filter. They are classified as spam before they get a chance to leave the server, so they are not allowed to leave. The only whitelisting that can be done is in the case of false positives. Although your intentions are good, they are not false positives and thus not allowed to be whitelisted.

Kindest Regards,
Scott M

Hello, Sorry you're having problems with spam. There are quite a few reasons that spam might be getting through your current SpamAssassin or BoxTrapper settings. I did go into your settings and I lowered the Spam Assassin configuration settings myself and saved it. So, I'm not sure if there was a problem on your end, or if it was something else. You should also be able to add to the black list, save it, then you should get more spaces. Additionally, check our section on Fighting Spam. This section should give you plenty of information that should help. If you continue to have problems, please let us know. Regards, Arnel C.

Most likely, this is because your email address may have been posted in a public location or added to a spam list in which that list is being passed around to multiple sources. For information on preventing spam, you may want to take a look at the following article: SpamAssassin: Fighting Spam

Thank you for posting this question ShortsOD.

If you are receiving spam emails posing as Inmotion Hosting, Tech support will need to review the email to see if our email accounts are getting spoofed or if the email is generated from a source not from Inmotion Hosting. Depending on how the email was originated you can do one of the following.

Fraudulent/Phishing emails NOT originating from InMotion Hosting:

These can be sent to US-CERT or another Anti-Phishing service

http://www.us-cert.gov/nav/report_phishing.html

Spam emails NOT originating from InMotion Hosting:

Unwanted Spam that cannot be "opted out" of and emails that don't stop can be submitted to Spam Cop or another DNS blacklisting company.

http://www.spamcop.net/

Spoofed or Phishing emails originating from Inmotion Hosting:

If these emails are originating from the Inmotion Hosting email server. These can be sent to support.

Use AMP to submit a ticket.

If you don't know where the email is originating from you will want tech support to review it.

Hello texas31, The spam was not sent from your email address, it was simply meant to look like it. It actually came from a server in Russia. This is known as 'spoofing', where an email appears to come from one server but was actually sent from another. Someone somewhere out there has your email address. Where they got it from is anyone's guess, but most likely someone you know has a compromised email account and the hacker obtained their mailing list. You can set up something called SPF records on your account to prevent spoofing. To add spf records to the account, you will want to go to the Email Authentication tool located in the Mail category of the Cpanel. For maximum protection in the SPF records, be sure to check the box under the "All Entry (ALL):" selection. We also have an article with a video that walks you through it. Setting up SPF Records If you are interested in just the SPF records, that begins at the 8:00 mark in the video. Best Regards, Scott M

Hello Jazzguy,

No, nothing has changed as far as server configuration from our side. However, I did check your account and see that Boxtrapper is disabled for every email address on your account.

The Spam Assassin setting, while at the default 5, can be set to filter more spam out buy lowering the score to 4 or even 3. Be careful to not set it too low as it can then begin filtering out emails that you normally want to see.

Additionally, you can use the User and Account level filtering tools to further customize your spam prevention.

I hope this answers your question. If you have any more questions or information specific to the issue please leave a comment below so we can further assist you.

Best Regards,
Scott M
