How can I successfully install CiviCRM for Wordpress here?

I have been unable to successfully install the CiviCRM plugin on a clean WordPress installation. This is 100% reproducible.

Applies to: Wordpress 4.7.2, CiviCRM plugin 4.7.16 & 4.6.26
When I upload and install the CiviCRM plugin, I get the following error:

Warning: Error while sending QUERY packet. PID=234428 in /home/[ACCOUNT]/public_html/[HOSTNAME]/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1877
(The PID number varies each time.)
Otherwise, it reports that the plugin was "successfully installed"

I then Activate the plugin (successfully) and I am then prompted to Configure the plugin.
The plugin reports that "Database version and connection settings have been verified and look correct!" along with a checklist.

I click Check and Install It reports that it was successfully installed

But the page refreshes and I get the following error:

CiviCRM Home

System Status: Error
Cron Not Running
Timestamp Mismatch
Configure Default Mailbox
Complete Setup

At this point, I would expect to be able to configure CiviCRM to correct these errors. However, the plugin appears non-functional at this point.

I have tried on various clean installs and with a separate mySQL database and the time adjusted for my timezone. Folks in a support forum for CiviCRM have suggested this may be a host-specific issue. For what it's worth, I did try this with another hosting provider and the plugin failed during uploading, so we're closer to a solution here. :-)

Any suggestions?

Hello jeffweiss, Thank you for your question about installing, and configuring CiviCRM. Do you have error logging enabled for your site that you're trying to install this on? Have you checked the PHP error logs? If your unsure about how to do this with CiviCRM, I would recommend asking their support team how to do so for CiviCRM, or having a look at our instructions about how to turn on PHP error logging. Gratefully, Casey B.
