Promote to front page if not using /node

I am trying to promote some articles to my front page in Drupal. It is a very basic site but I am using a homepage different than the standard /node provided by Drupal as described in the Drupal forum here:
https://www.drupal.org/node/987242
I changed the front page according to the instructions posted on your site here:
https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/drupal-8/homepage/change-front-page?tsrc=aaq
However, when reading through it, I found no actual solution to bypass this issue. As I am unable to create an account for whatever reason on Drupal, I figured I could post this question here. Would you suggest I return back to the default option for simplicity or is there another method that you would encourage me trying?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hello immunoh, Sorry to hear you are having issues with your Drupal front page. If you are attempting to do something that is not default, you will need to ask the folks at Drupal community. You may also need to find out why you cannot create an account with them. It may be a simple setting they can correct. I did a search on what it appears you are trying to do and came up with these results. You can see that this issue has come up before and it appears it may not yet be solved. Kindest Regards, Scott M
