Password protect a site under construction

I'm building a WordPress site to help experts attract new customers. I want to password protect it while under construction so that when I'm ready I can invite the experts (my potential clients) to see what I've got so far (and subscribe to my services). When it's ready for prime time I want to remove password protection and let everyone see it.

Hello Larryrondeau, Thanks for the question about password protecting your WordPress site. We do have a tutorial that can take you through the process. However, I would highly recommend using a Maintenance Mode login for WordPress in place of the Password protection. Check out the different (and free) options options for Maintenance mode plugins here. This plugin allows you to create an informative screen that stops people from getting to your site while allowing you to work on building your site. Having a screen tells your customer of the upcoming website is much better than giving customers a password error when going to your URL. I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance. Regards, Arnel C.
