Need help in setting up shipping and coupons?

What is the best way to allow for free shipping on individual products? If I install a free shipping or flat rate shipping module does it automatically affect all products on website? If I set up a coupon code to place in the checkout for a discount, how does it pertain to just that product and not be able to be used on any product? Thanks!
