Utilizing WordPress on the development site before going Live

I want to be able to design and develop my website using Wordpress. It appears that everything I do will be seen by the public. I do NOT want to go live while developing.
What are my options?
I already have Wordpress installed.
The only documentation I found indicated I would need to install Workpress in a temporary URL. Is this a second install?
Also, setting up the temporary URL doesn't appears to be extremely problematic and time consuming for those of us who are newbies. Please help!

Hello Jessc, Thank you for your question about developing your WordPress site without going live. The easiest way to keep your site from going live is to password protect the folders associated with it. For example, if you password protect your public_html folder, your whole account would be protected. Then, you will not be able to access any of your websites, without using the password you set up. When you are ready for the website to go live, just Remove the password protection. If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below. Thank you, John-Paul
