Adding drop down categories

I'm new to our online storefront and will be making some changes. Right now our categories are setup on the left side: Apparel, Maple Products, etc. . I would like to make "pop out"(drop down if they were horizontal) subcategories. For example Apparel as the main category with; Shirts, Sweat Shirts, Caps..being the "pop out" subcategories to choose from.

How do I go about doing this?
