How Does InMotion Hosting Monitor CPU Usage?

We just opened an account with InMotion and are in the process of developing our website. We current have a site on Hostgator which gets 30,000+ hits a month. While the hostgator site measures CPU usage in seconds, we typically run on that site below the average. With InMotion, in our present state of development, with just 2 of us accessing the site, your CPU usage meter says we have exceeded 20%, even while our bandwith is less than 10k. I'm concerned that, once we launch, we'll exceed CPU limits. How do we correct this?

Hello stejohns, and thank you for your question regarding the CPU usage of your website. Typically when you're doing a lot of manipulation in the admin section, this will be more intensive than typical website activity. There are a lot of things you can do to help ensure that your website is as optimized as possible to be able to handle larger levels of traffic on a shared server. I'd recommend taking a look at my guide on what is high system resource usage, and checking out the common high resource usage problems, and resolving high resource usage problems sections for some tips on what to try for reducing usage. From what I could tell looking at your account's CPU usage, it doesn't look like you have any PHP scripts really running over 1.00 second of CPU time, so more than likely your best bet would be to attempt to cache as much content as possible, such as global module caching in Joomla 2.5. This way your account doesn't have to continually call up PHP scripts to pull data from a database, and instead just use cached HTML content which is way less intensive on your account's resources. Please let us know if you have any further questions at all. - Jacob
