After I edit my A & CNAME record to Shopify servers, InMotion hosted incoming email doesn't work.

Please advise.

Thank you!

Thanks for getting in touch with us!

Remember, the default 'MX' record points to whatever your domain name is-- so if you change your A Record in the DNS Zone Editor, by default your mail will end up going to the same address.

Luckily, pointing your email in a situation like this only requires a few more steps:

  • Change your primary MX record so that, instead of pointing to your domain name, it points to the mail subdomain (like mail.yourdomainname.com but using your actual domain name instead of 'yourdomainname').
  • By default, the 'mail' subdomain is just going to be a CNAME. You need to change it to an A record. Now, make sure that A record points back to the IP address associated with this particular cPanel account.
    • You should be able to tell what the IP address is by looking at the rest of the zone editor, but if you aren't sure it is easy to check the IP address in cPanel.

Now, your mail sent to the domain should get routed correctly to your InMotion Hosting server! If you run into trouble, though, don't hesitate to contact our 24/7 Technical Support Team
