Hello Vicwebsite,

Thanks for asking about creating your own website and hosting it on a "world wide web server."

Depending on your ambition and goals, creating a website can be a quick and easy process or a long and involved task that may take some time. It may seem like a daunting task when you begin to delve into the details, but as I said, it can be really simple or very complex depending on what you're trying to do. In this reply, I'm just going to broadly describe the pieces that make up a website and then add links to help you get started:

Getting Started With Building a Website

The two main parts of any website are:

  • Domain name - the website's name that people use in their internet browsers
  • Hosting server - the service that you use to save your website files; this is where your website lives and is served from

Any website that you see on the internet needs to have these two things to be accessible on the internet. So, you will need to decide on a domain name and who the hosting service will be. InMotion Hosting is, of course, a hosting service - one of the many services we provide.

You may already have an idea of what you want to do with your website. If not, then I would recommend determining the goals of your website. You should boil them down to a list. You don't have to do everything at once. This is usually the downfall of many website creators. If you're new to building a website, keep it simple at first, then expand later. If you're trying to build a 10,00 product e-commerce right off the bat, then you may want to consult with an expert. If you're simply trying display information or media, then you may not require a long term plan and building it yourself would be more realistic. Writing down the goals for your website and determining what you want will go a long way in helping to plan your steps in the process.

Once you have your goals down, you can start researching the software that you're going to use to build your website. If you're doing it yourself, there are many solutions available on the internet. We have a large focus on WordPress because it is FREE and it is the most widely used website building solution on the internet. There are other options though, so you may want to explore them to see if they meet your needs. if you look at our general Website support page you'll find a getting started guide and descriptions of different software used to build websites.

When you have your software selected you can begin the learning process on using the software to build your site. You're welcome to use our Support Center website for articles, tips, and questions.

Marketing your website

Once you have the site up, you also asked how to advertise your website. Actively advertising your website costs money. Also, you would need to target your customer base and region if you intend get people to your business or meet you business goals. You can advertise with Google, Facebook, YouTube to start. Or you may choose to advertise in local media, or publications. It all depends on your goals and your budget.

Depending on the content of your site, you may also want to focus on what's called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. There are many things involved with this process. Primarily, it will depend on the content you use on your site, how you interact with viewers and/or potential customers to your website, and the basic value of the information that you present - just to name a few things. Depending on the topic that you're covering, there may be heavy competition for search engine results placment (SERP). This means where you would fall in results if a person searched for keywords concerning your website. We have several blog articles that can help you get familiar with SEO. i would also recommend resources like Moz for learning about SEO.

I hope that helps to get you started! InMotion also offers a 1 page site that our designers can build for you - it's called QuickStarter. We also provide complete Web Design Services that you can employ to get you going on a more comprehensive website goal.
