How to create a Child Theme

I created my website then I updated wordpress and all the themes and plug ins. This totally ruined my website. So tech support restored my website and they recommended that I create a child theme. I Have no Idea how to do this. I see the directions from inmotion but I do not know what text to substitute in the example. The theme I am using is called monument. I created the 2 files as shown in the example but I do not know what words to substitute in the files. Can someone tell me what I can do?
