Hello Bob,

Thanks for your question about "how long does it take for a website to become active so it can be found on the web?" The answer depends on what you're referring to.  If you have already registered the domain name and/or pointed the name servers to the hosting server, then it may take a few hours (or less).  If you just just published the site and changed the name servers to point to the hosting server, then there is a possible propagation delay be up to 24 hours.  

If you're thinking about how long a website would need to be active to be found by a search engine on the web, it may take 4 days or more depending on the topic and the content of your website.
