Changing the DNS so I can host a client's website.

day50 12 months ago in Domain / Dns Nameserver Changes 0
Hello, I am new at this and need some help. I have been developing a site for a nonprofit as a subdomain and need to transfer the site so that their domain now points to the location on my InMotion server. I know I need to change the DNS servers but are there some clear simple instructions on the best steps to follow? Also, how long should this typically take?

What is the IP address I should put for the A Record

My domain is registered with another company and I must keep the nameservers there for other services I am using. I have the A Record pointed to my other hosting account, but I have setup the site on InMotion hosting cPanel and now I need to update the A Record to point here to my InMotion hosted site. Where do I find this IP address for the site? Also, i will have add on domains, but for all of my add ons I can point the nameservers here to InMotion. Will that cause any issues?
Thank you.

Support Center Login Not Working

I need to examine and possibly change my DNS records. Why won't you let me log into the Support Center? It won't let me log in any way at all, including social media. It won't let me log in using my user name and password. And your DNS setting icon is weird. It takes me to a completely blank page. What the heck is going on here?

Cannot Change DNS Information

I click on Domains: Manage Domains: and I then click on mydomain.com and once I click on Point Your Domain -- I get a blank page. Am I alone? My domain name is registered with Inmotion but hosted elsewhere, in other words no hosting account with Inmotion. But Inmotion has a business and legal obligation to grant access or else why would anyone in the world purchase/register a domain name with them? Am I alone hefre?

Issues pointing a CNAME to BigCommerce

Hi,

I've set up a subdomain through CPANEL pointing to my BigCommerce store shop.ultimategaming.net -> store-qtuskq975m.mybigcommerce.com

It hasn't propagated in more than 15 hours (I know CPANEL takes max 8 hours). I've also tried setting up an A RECORD instead pointing to my store's IP address, also to no avail. I switched it back to CPANEL as per BigCommerce support's instructions. They told me they couldn't locate the DNS and that I should get in touch with you to see what the problem is?

Thank you :)

Are there any drawbacks to using custom name servers?

Good afternoon!

I set up a custom name server for my reseller account using your instructions. I created both ns1 and ns2 and directed them to my shared IP address. However, if I use your default name servers (ns1.servconfig.com & ns2.servconfig.com) I'm provided with 2 IP addresses.

From my understanding, the 2 default DNS servers would provide more redundancy. Unless they're both hosted on the same machine... And even then, as long as they're hosted on a different machine than my websites, it's still more redundancy than hosting my name server AND websites on the same machine.

I've seen this question asked in the comments several times, with the back-end details being skimmed over / ignored. DNS is one of, if not the most important aspect of running a website, right? Many large websites will host DNS separately with a dedicated host...

Should a novice even be messing around with this stuff? It's cool to have your own branded servers and all, and it will help if I have to move my clients sites... but if any problems arise I won't have a clue where to start...

I would really appreciate some clarification here!
