SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) creates a secure connection between a web server and a web client. SSL makes sure that any data transactions shared between a server and a site visitor are private.

When a website is using an SSL for a secure connection, you can see a padlock in the address bar of the web browser. In this article, we will cover how you can install an SSL on your dedicated server using WHM. If you would like more information about SSLs you can visit our full guide regarding SSL and why it is important.

The SSL Process:

The SSL installation process has three critical steps. The first step involves generating a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) on your server. The CSR is later used when purchasing your SSL. Certificate Authorities are the third-party entities who will use your CSR to generate an SSL, and SSLs are purchased through them. Once you have received your SSL certificate, you can install the SSL on your server through WHM.

How to Generate the Certificate Signing Request

  1. Log in WHM
  2. Choose SSL/TLS
  3. Select Generate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request
  4. Fill in the information for the SSL
  5. Click the Create button
  6. The system will generate the CSR, Certificate, and a Key

Now you have the information you need whether you are installing a self-signed certificate or purchasing a verified "padlock" Certificate Authority SSL.

If You Are Purchasing a CA SSL

Once you have generated your CSR on the server, you must provide the Certificate Authority with the CSR to generate the SSL. The vendor you buy your SSL from depends on wherever you get the best deal. InMotion Hosting can install SSLs from a variety of third parties.

How to Install the SSL

  1. Log in WHM
  2. Choose SSL/TLS
  3. Select Install an SSL Certificate on a Domain
  4. Fill in the Domain you are securing
  5. If you are installing a self-signed SSL paste the Certificate you received before in the Certificate field, autofill, and click Install
  6. If you are installing a third-party CA SSL you can use the Certificate Authority Bundle you were provided when you purchased the SSL, autofill, and click Install

Well done! You now know how to install an SSL through WHM in your dedicated server.
