There are times when you may need to access your email account settings in Thunderbird. This is especially helpful if you find yourself troubleshooting an email issue or if you want to setup another account and want to see what your settings are on a working account.

Begin by clicking on "Tools" and then "Account Settings" in your Thunderbird menu:


This will bring up the Account Settings window where you can then select the email account and view your server settings and make changes if needed.


In the same Account Settings window, you can also click Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side of the window (at the bottom of that list). Next click on the outgoing server for the email and account and if you need to change any of your outgoing settings, click on the Edit button to bring up the SMTP Server window.

I've been looking for how to set up the outgoing server everywhere, it's down there at the bottom!! Why is the incoming server settings separate from the outgoing ones?Anyway this solved my issue.

Why is Security set to none and Authenication set to Password,transmited insecurely? This seems highly dangerous to me.

Hello Marcus,

These are simply the most basic settings that the vast majority of email clients are set to. You can certainly select the secure settings for your account if you desire.

Hi; I try to edit e-mail account, window pops up says " An account with this name already exists. Please enter a different account name." yes, I am going to right settings..... please tell me how to edit an existing account?..

Hello Charles,

Thank you for contacting us. This seems to be a common error, since there were many results in Google.

In this post from the Official Mozilla Forums, they noticed a similar account name and fixed it by renaming it.

If you are having a lot of trouble it may be easier to create a new account in Thunderbird.

Not sure I will even get an email reply since I am having issue with window live and want so badly to go back to my old Thunderbird email ( I just got a new window 7 computer) and I have no understanding of what is and where is my outgoing server SMTP password, and sure they will ask me for incoming one too. (?)  IF I check create a new account in THUNDERBIRD .. will I be able to have my existing email address. As I would not wish to change that after 50 yrs? thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello Mary,

You can use Thunderbird to connect to almost any email account you have. The username and password for SMTP connections, both incoming and outgoing is the same as your email account.

Hi there.


I am having a problem with thunder bird on a recently upgraded laptop (windows 10).

it would seem that thunderbird makes the initial connecting to the pop server but is not downloading any email.

It has been working for the last couple of weeks but has suddenly stoped working.

HI ScottI have just installed a domain and using thinderbird got my first email via that domain email using pop 3.My problem is that I cannot see the emails previously received - so new emails are coming in but how do I get the new emails to go into the old folder for this email address?

Hello Alex,

Did you previously connect with another device that was using POP3. If so, then the emails may not be available to be seen as they are usually pulled from the server.

When i try to update or edit Thunderbird settings and click on Tools => Account Settings => Server Settings I do not get to the server settings screen. Instead, I get an error message "An account with this name already exists. Please enter another account name". Any way of getting round this?

hi I have problem sending emails from Ireland with mozila thunderbird. this mesage apears when i triing send email : An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded:

Hello Mirek,

If you are using cPanel, then you may need to contact your host in order to configure the SMTP settings. This would otherwise be available in the Web Host Manager for VPS or dedicated server accounts. Your mail settings should let you see the server being used for outbound email using SMTP and from there whoever has control of that configuration will be where that restriction is in place.
