Email Marketing 101

Email Marketing is a general term used for promoting your website by emailing customers and potential customers who visit your site.

What are the different types of Email Marketing?

  • Newsletters: are a great regularly timed way to keep your site visitors informed. You can choose to do publish weekly, monthly or whatever schedule works best for you and your business. The most effective newsletter lists are created by offering a signup form on your site so you know that the people receiving your newsletter really want to receive it. It is generally considered bad practice to email newsletters to anyone who didn’t ask to be on your list.
  • Email Promotions: Do you have an upcoming sale, special offer or product lunch you want to let visitors know about? Email promotions are a great way to get the word out for your business to your customers and potential customers.
  • Surveys: Want feedback on how to improve your product or service; or a better idea of what customers are pleased about? Surveys are a great way to show your customers you care what they think and find opportunities for improvement.

How can I send out a Newsletter, Email Promotion or Survey?

While you could use the CC and BCC fields in either webmail or your email client, there’s a much better way to conduct email marketing campaigns by automating the process. One example is an application named phpList. It’s a program specifically built for email distribution, and it’s quick and easy to install through your site’s cPanel. Please see our article How to install phpList for step-by-step installation instructions.

Bulk Email Sending

For us to whitelist domains and help prevent spam, we recommend shared customers sending more than 250 emails per hour submit an email limit exception via your Account Management Panel (AMP). cPanel VPS / dedicated server administrators can set this in WebHost Manager (WHM).

While shared hosting has more restrictions, we do offer a large variety of VPS hosting plans with more email flexibility.

  1. Hello. If I integrate my mailchimp account with my in motin site, will I be able to send unlimited emails to my lists of leads? Thanks.

    1. Hi Sarah, you are bound by the limitations by Mailchimp and the type of account you have with them. The emails would be sent via MailChimp and only captured via your website. The free account if I’m not mistaken is capped at 2,000 users.

  2. Your staff needs to stop telling people that VPS server have no limit on emails/hr because that is an outright lie. I have a VPS account and they refuse to raise my email limit over 1k/hr.

    1. You can always increase the hourly limit at any time in WHM (on a VPS/Dedicated server).

There is no hard limit on a VPS/Dedicated server. But, it is up to you to manage/troubleshoot any issues caused by increasing this limit. Such as IP blacklisting, Spoofed E-mail address’s and scripts on the server sending out messages.

      Thank you,
      John-Paul

    1. Hello David,

If you setup the settings for the outbound server using “vps12345.inmotionhosting.com” then that is what is being outputted. In order to use your domain name, you would need to change those settings and also not use the secure email settings. You can also user your domain name for secure email if you purchase an SSL certificate for that purpose.

I hope that helps to answer your question! If you require further assistance, please let us know!

      Regards,
      Arnel C.

    1. Hello Arsalan,

Take a search through the WordPress plugins. There are many services out there that can definitely handle the job. One of the best is a service called MailChimp. I hope that helps to answer your question! If you require further assistance, please let us know!

      Regards,

  3. Hi Scott,

Is there any software or servives for email distribution at inMotion?

We are on VPS1000… but we have 46,000 clients on our email list (all opted in)

Is this manageable, or should we be going to MailChimp or Constant Contact (who charge quite a bit for that large of a list)?

    Thanks!  P

    1. Provide more details about getting blacklisted and how to avoid it. Perhaps offer a pay-for service through inMotion that can make distribution affordable. Mailchimp and Constant Contact are rather expensive.

One of my former hosting companies had software and a service called Email Brain, which was very affordable… maybe you can look into something like that.

      Thanks.

    2. When sending out to a large list like this, be sure to limit the emails that are sent simultaneously. For example, sending out 46,000 emails can be sent out at a rate of 1,916 per hour and complete the list in 24 hours.

Regarding blacklisting, as a very large number of emails are being sent out from a single location, there is a high possibility that you can be placed on a blacklist. You would need to either work with the blacklist providers to get yourself delisted when you are placed on a blacklist, or work with a 3rd party like MailChip that helps avoid email blacklisting.

  4. I am using the third party software as “Interspire Email Marketer”. Can I setup this software on my VPS hosting and send emails through the email server?

    1. Hello Bata,
I looked at the system requirements and our VPS servers can definitely handle the software. Be aware however that we are unable to support it as far as troubleshooting. We have no experience with this particular software.

If it is a software you are familiar with and want to install and use it on your VPS, however, go for it!

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  5. Hi , recently we purchased hosting for centauruscharter.com we will upgrade this hosting to VPS1000 as we need to do email marketing.

    Regards,

    Alex

    1. Hello Alex,

That is great! As you are on a VPS you do not have the 250 emails per hour limitation. You are free to email market as you see fit as long as it does not cause server issues. Be sure to stay on the up and up so your IP does not get blacklisted. You have a dedicated IP so your actions are the only ones that can get it listed. May your marketing be a success!

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M
