How to create an email signature in Horde Mail

Email signatures are generally used to display the sender’s name and contact information at the end of an email. Sometimes they are used to give website links or even memorable anecdotes. Regardless of what you wish to make your signature say, it is much easier if this content is automatically added to the end of every email instead of having to add it manually for each email. Below are instructions that teach you how to add your own custom email signature within your Horde email client.

Creating an email signature in Horde

  1. Log into your Webmail dashboard and choose the Horde option.
  2. From the Horde dashboard, go to the top of the screen and at the right look for the icon that looks a gear. When you click on this icon there will be a series of drop down menus. Simply hover over Preferences and then click on Mail when the menu appears.

  3. Click on the section labeled Personal Information.

  4. In the Personal Information section you can see two drop-down menus. One is for your default identity and the other allows you to select the identity you want to edit. The second drop-down menu also allows you to create a NEW identity if necessary. These identities allow you to specify the sender’s email information including: your full name, the email from address, a reply-to email address, addresses for BCC, and a signature.

  5. From this page, you are able to create your signature. Scroll down until you find the Signature field. This is located at the bottom of the screen. You can create a text signature using the first box labeled Your signature. If you want to create an HTML signature, then use the editor at the bottom of the screen. If you leave the HTML editor blank, then the text signature will be used. add-signature
  6. When you have finished creating your desired signature, click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

You have now completed creating a signature for your Horde mail. Below is a screen shot of the email signature displaying in your email when you create a new email message.

In order to see signatures while composing an email in Horde, go to: Preferences > Mail > Composition – check the box for Show the signature on the compose screen. Make sure to click on Save. Remember that HTML signatures will show only with the HTML composition on. Additionally, HTML signatures will not be visible if your recipient is viewing emails in plain text.

  1. Hi Arnel,

I’ve tried steps you’ve mentioned and I have my image sig as : yet still unable to get the image appear.

    1. Hello,
Sorry for the problem with your signature image. The image URL you’re referring is not a valid path to an image. You would need to have complete URL leading to the image in order for it to work. For example, the path should look something like this:

That current URL leads to a survey page. Put the correct image URL in there and it should work.

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.

  2. I had the same problem. When you compose the email you must check the box ‘HTML composition’ at the top right.

  3. Hi, I followed all the steps, but my signature does not appear when I reply. Why?

    1. I am not sure. It works when I follow the instructions. Go through once more to see if you may have missed anything.

  4. Hi!

When I write a new email it’s composed in rich text (HTML), but the inline in my box only shows plain text, stripping all images. How do I fix this?

    Thank you so mcuh!

    1. Irina, it’s possible that your recipient email is set to strip out HTML elements. I would check your receiving email settings.

  5. I, too am trying to insert an image into my signature, however, the image is saved on a word document, not HTML.  The dropdown box continues to request the image be placed there, but it won’t paste into it.

    1. Hello Christine Foltz,

The image you’re using cannot be a paste from the Word document. You will need to save or import that image into a JPG or other compatible graphic format. After that you will need to upload the image into a location where it can be accessed through the internet. You can do this by uploading the file (using cPanel file manager) in the PUBLIC_HTML folder of your InMotion Hosting account. Once the file has been uploaded, the path for the graphic file will look something like this:

You would replace “” with your website’s domain name and “graphic-file-name” with the graphic file name that you intend to use.

You can then go into HORDE and paste in the URL (as we have indicated above), then click on UPLOAD. This will set your signature image for Horde.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

      Arnel C.

  6. This message part contains HTML data, but inline HTML display is disable.

  7. Please, i’m trying to set up a signature with my company but i still don’t get the steps. please help me through.

  8. I have a company signature formatted and saved in Word as a .docx.  Can I save the Word document and have it attached to outgoing emails as my signature?  Thanks

    1. That does not seem to be a feature supported by Horde at this time. I advise re-formatting the signature for Horde.

    1. Hello Hans,

You will need to create the email in HTML mode to use the HTML signature. Also, HTML signatures will not display on shared server accounts, but do display on VPS and Dedicated server accounts.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  9. Thank you, Scott, I have been doing that on every email but is there a way to make sure that option is my default option so I don’t have to click that every time?

  10. I can only see my signature in sent messages when I click “switch to HTML composition.” How can I make my signature from the lower signature box (the HTML box) my default signature setting rather than having to click switch to HTML every time?

    1. Hello Stacy.

Did you make your signature in the HTML signature box? That signature will only show when HTML composition is checked.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  11. I can’t get Horde to use this as my signature, even though it’s in Preferences:

    <font color=”#3E505A” size=3pt face=”arial”><b>Ann MacKenzie</b></font><br/>

    1. Hello Ann,

Thank you for contacting us. I was able to get your signature working in Horde by removing some of the image size formatting. Here is what worked for me:

      &lthtml&gt&ltbody&gt&ltfont color="#3E505A" face="arial" size="3pt"&gt&ltb&gtAnn MacKenzie&lt/b&gt&lt/font&gt&ltbr /&gt

  12. Hi,

i have horde 5.2.6 and i see it’s disappeared the source code button.

How i insert my html code now?

    1. Hello Vinx,

Is the signature section missing completely? I just checked my version which is 5.1.1 and it is there. However I checked the changelog for version 5.2 and it seemed to only inlclude calDav support and did not remove any features regarding the email signature.

      Best Regards,
      TJ Edens

    1. Hello HRA,

Unfortunately, you will not be able to see the signature while composing an email in Horde. They way they wrote the application does not display it, nor is there an option to make it appear. You can submit a request to the developers of Horde for that feature, though it is not presently available in the version on the server.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Arnel C.

  13. I figured out how to add everything, including an image, but stumbled across this when searching why the damn thing won’t show up when I’m typing out a new email. I’ve saved the signature I made using the HTML editor, but it’s not showing up. If you have any ideas as to why, I’d appreciate the help, thank you.

    1. Hello E.L.

HTML signatures will not display on shared server accounts. Text signatures will work fine, however.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  14. Hi,

I am trying to add signature on Horde mail and links to social websites of my magazine but I want to add their logo as well. Eg: (fb logo) @LA Fahsion Time, which is a link to magazine’s facebook page.

I hope I could expalin myself.

  15. Sirs. is there a feature which just simply allow me to copy / paste my logo in my e-mail signature? Does Horde even allow one to copy / paste as I am not able to do this with text even? Please advise.

  16. I have properly setup the email signature with images. However it the signature still doesn’t show? What could be the problem?

    1. Hello brap,

Thank you for contacting us. Make sure the email you are checking has HTML email enabled.

Do you see anything in the signature section?

What code are you using to input the images in your signature?

      Thank you,

  17. Hello,

I have a slightly different but related issue. How do I get a profile picture onto my Horde email account? I can’t see an option for this anywhere…

    Thanks, Harriet

  18. When I try to send an email it tells me this:

Can’t attach contact information: You didn’t mark a contact as your own yet.

What do I do to get the signature in my email?

    1. Hello Michael,

As long as you follow the directions in the article above, you should establish your default identity and create a signature that corresponds with it.

If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.

      Arnel C.

  19. Hi,

My signature is all set up and works fine. I wanted to know how I can stop the signature to go on every reply email and on only on new mails. As a result there are a bunch of signatures at the end of the thread.

    Please advice.

    1. Hello Federico,

I am having trouble understanding what you are saying. Are you still having issues or did you get it to work?

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

    2. Hello Mohini,

Although it canbe annoying, signatures were designed to go at the bottom of every email sent. There is not currently a setting to disable a signature on specific emails. The only way would be to disable the signature altogether and manually add your signature on emails you want to have them.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  20. Hi,

I want use my webmail to send newsletter, but can’t to load image html on istant corp of email, I upload the image on my domain, but not work.. instead if I copy the link to my browser It’s work..

  21. Hello,

I want to add a unsubscribe link to my mail so that the people who receive mails from can easily opt out of receving mails from me.

    Please help me.

    1. Hello Koma,

Generally, that’s some type of form on your website. What you do in the email is create an HTML link that links to that form so that people who get your email can fill out the form to opt out if that is what they want. Your signature would either have to be in HTML (to make the link live), or you would have to provide the form URL in plain text, if your signature or email is in plain text.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

      Arnel C.

  22. Im just using hoarde to send some emails – do i have to tick the html box in order for the signature to be sent? Or do i have to leave it unticked? I keep sending myself messages to check if it works, but i am not receiving any emails!?

    1. Hello kim,

Thank you for your question. No, you do not have to tick the HTML option for the signature to be sent. If you are just putting text in the signature, it is better to not tick the HTML box.

The HTML box would be checked if you want to insert HTML code into the signature. For example you can Insert an Image into your signature using HTML.

The signature will not affect your ability to send and receive emails. We are happy to help, but will need some additional information.

Are the emails being returned, or bounced?

Are you getting any errors messages? What are they?

      Thank you,

  23. I’ve just put my company logo at the HTML editor. but I don’t see my

company logo at the end of an email.

    what is the problem?

    1. Hello Eddy,

Thanks for the question. There apparently is no problem, you just will NOT see the signature when you’re composing the email. I just tested and the HTML signature I created only appears when you use HTML composition in creating the message. Also, only the receiver of the message will see the signature.

Apologies for the confusion, but that is how it works with Horde at this point. You may be interested in using Roundcube as your webmail client if you want to be able to see the signature within the email composition window.

I hope this helps to answer your question, please let us know if you require any further assistance.

      Arnel C.

  24. Hi JeffMa,

Thanks for the reply on my question but it didn’t solve my problem. I’m getting to the link box, insert the URL and then nothing happens when I click OK or Cancel.  I have to close the email and reopen.  Of course, nothing has been saved. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks, Barb

    1. Hello Barb,

Thanks for the question and sorry for the continued problems. If you’re adding this in the Horde Signature, when you highlight the words you’re using for the link, click on the drop down arrow and choose EMAIL, instead of using LINK. Then fill in what you’re trying to add for you unsubscribe link. This should accomplish what you’re trying to do with that HTML. The editor puts it in for you.

If you’re trying to do something different, please let us know where you are in the program and the steps you’re taking so that we can try to duplicate your efforts.

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.

  25. Hi,

looks like in my webmail, that “signature” box is not shown…?

i don’t know how to attach an image here.. to show you that the signature box is not there.. 🙁

    1. Hello Matt,

I tested the signature function on one of our shared accounts, and the signature sends/saves successfully.

This may be a server or permission issue you are experiencing. I looked the email address up (you provided privately), and it looks like Godaddy handles the email for that domain. I recommend contacting Godaddy, so they can review the server/your account for issues.

      Thank you,

    2. Hello monyong,

Thank you for contacting us. If you do not see the signature box in Horde, you may be using a different version, or there may be a problem.

I could not locate an account for you on our server. But, I recommend contacting the company that is hosting your email, so they can test/investigate further.

      Thank you,

    3. Based on the content that you entered in the comment, it looks like you are attempting to place the entire HTML code into the address. Simply place the following in there:

      mailto:[email protected]?subject=UNSUBSCRIBE&body=Please%20unsubscribe%20me%20from%20your%20mailing%20list

  26. Jeff,

Yes, I’m aware of that and that’s not a problem. It’s just that it doesn’t show up on the email that’s sent.

    1. As anonymous comments do not appear to the public until we manually approve them, could you provide your email credentials here so that i can take a look?

  27. I’m sorry but I’ve followed your directions on the new link that you put up. It just doesn’t work. Yes, I’ve done *everything* that you’ve described. I just get a blank email, no signature. I put in my logo, the text is in Bold with color and I put in a hyperlink. Nothing shows up.The only way it works is if I do it manually each time. Ugh!

Don’t understand why it’s so difficult to get a Signature to be embedded in an email. It appears that I’m not the only one who’s having this problem as well.

    Matt Morgan

    1. Please keep in mind that signatures may not appear when composing the mail. Do you see anything on the recipient’s end when the mail is sent?

  28. Totally agreed with you, Frank! too bad HOrde did not see that inconvenience.

If I don’t see the signature at the end of the email, I was wondering if the recipient sees it or not.

But I like the outlook of Horde email better than Squirrel. So I got rid of the signature, prepare a signature on a word document, copy and paste it in the body of my email.

    Kim H

  29. This is also pissing me off.

My signature belongs below what I said, not at the bottom of the email.

If I respond to a new client via email asking them to give me a call; I now have to tell them to scroll to the bottom of the email to find my number, or to check something on my website.

At least put the signature in the response so that I can cut and paste it to where it needs to be!

    1. Horde will indeed place the signature later in the email after it is sent and cannot be edited on the fly. Other email clients such as Thunderbird or Outlook are able to change these on the fly.

    2. Hello Frank,

Sorry for the frustration with the Horde signature functionality. We unfortunately don’t make the software, it’s created by a third party. You can go to the forums for Horde email and let the developers know what you want. Other than that, you can either copy your HTML signature somewhere and then paste it in repeatedly, or use a different email client.

      Kindest regards,
      Arnel C.

  30. Eventhough the signature shows in the recipient’s email but it is very inconvenient that it does not show on the email. It does not look a complete email and sometime you are not sure if the recipient actually see the signature or not.

    1. Hello Kim Ho,

That is the default behavior for the Horde mail client, unfortunately.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  31. I too have been trying to find a way to have my signature follow my replies.  On all the Horde lists, I just kept being told that it should not be done that way becuase it is against net-etiquite, is confusing, is not the best way to do it, blah blah blah.  It seems so counter-intuitive not to have each respective communicants signature below their e-mail so that you know exactly who sent what quoted langauge.  Out of luck for now.

  32. Hi..I need a favor.

maybe I already make a changes on my email setting.

unfortunately, i didnt receive any email / cant see a new email.

I tried to send new email from horde to my other email n reply it from my other email, still didnt receive the new email / cant see a new email. I’ve tried few times.

    help me…. tq much.

  33. Hi Jeff,

Is there an option to make the signature appear on the reply message?

    Pls let me know

    1. Hello Kim,

If you have a preset reply message and you want a signature to appear, you need to make sure your signature is already a part of the reply. If it’s in HTML, then your reply message will need to be in HTML format so that you can add your signature.

      Arnel C.

  34. No , I stll can not see the signature.

I did log out the webmail and log back in.

There must be something that I did not select.

    Please help

    Kim Ho

    1. Have you tested this by sending a message and checking it? Please keep in mind that the signature may not appear in the composition box, but will then appear once received by the recipient.

  35. I followed the instrutions to create signature, saved it.

When i created a new message, the signature does not show up.

    Could you please help me.

    Kim Ho

    1. Are there multiple identities listed within the signature page? Check to ensure that the identity that you are editing the signature for is the identity that you are sending from.

  36. still i didnt get it to my signature, when i go for compose its not showing, whats the reason in webmail

    1. When I tried editing the Personal Information, I couldn’t access a page on which to create a signature; that is, that option did not appear. Please advise.

  37. Ive successfully created a html signature and the preferences were saved but I keep getting this message when I sent a new message:

Can’t attach contact information: You didn’t mark a contact as your own yet.

Please tell me how to fix this.

    1. Hello Loz,

You will need to add yourself to your address book. Once you finish that you will see a link that says “mark as your own”. I believe this is in the upper right corner. Once done, your address book entry will be marked as your own contact. This should cause this error to go away.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  38. Hello! I am also trying to insert and image in my email singature, but am unable to figure out how to upload an image.  I have read your other responses and tried following them, but the link that you have given about how to add an image doesn’t make sense to me.  If I am sending an email how could the email know where the the image is coming from (pardon my ignorance) and also when I click on the image icon that is directly to the left of flash icon a box pops up that doesn’t even give me an option to upload an image. Please explain what I should do here.

Also, I have tried to send an email in html, but was not able to upload an image their either. I look forward to you help, thank you! 🙂

    1. Hello Tiffany,

Horde does not allow the uploading of an image into it’s signature. You would need to have the image stored elsewhere, say on your account. From there you would enter the URL of the image. You would need to know the exact location of the file. For example: and insert that into the URL field.

As far as entering a logo into the signature, you simply need to enter the full URL like I described above. The other article about inserting images into the body is not needed as the little box you enter the URL in will create that code for you behind the scenes.

I did see an upload button when trying to add an image to the body of the email using the HTML version. I tested this as well just to be sure and it worked fine. You can also enter the full URL of an item like you have to do with the signature image too if you wish.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  39. My signature is for some reason invisible when I compose a message. It does appear when I send the mail but why is it not visible when typing.

    1. Hello eric,

This is just the way that Horde works when composing a new message. Unfortunately you do not see your signature, it just adds it when the message is sent.

      – Jacob

  40. I was able to add my signature following your instructions but what it’s doing is putting the signature all the way at the end of an email – so, when I reply, instead of the signature going under my reply, it’s going all the way at the bottom of the email.  It appears:

    My reply

    Original message

I want the signature to appear below my email, NOT all the way at the bottom, where it makes no sense.  I can’t figure out how to correc that – can you help?

    1. Hello Jane,

Thank you for your question. This setting is coded into Horde, so unfortunately, cannot be changed.

Here is a link to a cpanel forum, where they are discussing the same issue.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.
      Thank you,

    1. Hello Mohammad,

This article does not cover logos specifically, but you would use the HTML signature portion to add an image to your signature. Be sure to use a correct URL and test it before saving the configuration.

I have created and tested a logo in an HTML signature without issue, so it should also work for you. Note that when checking the test email in Horde it defaulted to the text version (for email and signature) but when using my office email and gmail, it defaulted to the HTML email and the logo displayed.

      Kindest Regards,
      Scott M

  41. I am using Horde to access email at bluehost and would like to create a customised footer / signiture. Although it is easy enough to create a text line I cant get the “insert an image” option to work and the screen just locks up! Anybody know how to do this?

    1. It works correctly here at InMotion so I’m not sure what Bluehost has going on over there. I recommend contacting them for a resolution.

  42. Horde has a new altered format and this option doesn’t appear any more, and I have lost me previous signature. ANy help?

    1. Due to the recent change in Horde, the settings have changed a bit. To access it now, hover over the same Settings icon, Preferences, then click on Mail. From here, click on Personal Information. You should then see your signature field there again.

  43. How can I insert my company logo in my signature? I don’t see an option. When I copy and paste it just shows it as text.
