Configuring the Multilingual Plugin in DokuWiki

Once you have the Multilingual plugin installed, you will need to configure and set up your pages in different languages. The Multilingual plugin creates a namespace for each language. Each language can be represented by a text link or by a flag that represents the language. See the image below for what the flags look like.

English example of multilingual plugin DokuWiki

The flags will only display if the language is supported on DokuWiki. Unfortunately, we do not have a list of supported languages for DokuWiki. The image to the right shows what the basic page in English looks like. The following steps will explain how to set up your DokuWiki for more than one language.

Important! The multilingual plugin does not translate your site into multiple languages. Each Language has a namespace created and links to each language page.

Configuring the Multilingual plugin

  1. Log into DokuWiki.
  2. Settings multilingual plugin DokuWiki

Click the Admin link at the top right and go to Configuration Manager.

Find the “Multilingual Plugin Settings“. The available settings are as follows.

    Multilingual Plugin Settings
Space separated list of enabled languages (ISO codes). This allows the different language links to show on the page. The format is like follows:

en, fr, de, it, ru, ko
Use flags on screen instead of ISO language two letter code? Check for yes, uncheck for no.This will show the language country flag in the links.
Use the browser’s preference to set the language used by the wiki’s ui.This will detect the language of the browser and set the language to the browser language.
When logging in, redirect the user to the start page in the language namespace. This will allow the specific language page to load when logging in.
When the pagename matches this regular expression, don’t show the translation menu. This allows a regular expression to be used to remove the language links from the page.
Enter a pagename here where this plugin’s usage is explained for your users.Allows a page to be created that explains how the Multilingual plugin works.

Click the “Use flags on screen instead . . .” check box to enable the language country flag in the menu.

    Save the changes.

  3. Configure flag multilingual plugin DokuWiki

Now the flags will show on your menu. Flags that are dim are pages that have no content. Flags that are fully visible are pages with content. See image to the right.

When the Multilingual plugin is first set up, all the flags will be dim. This is because the language plugin only creates a namespace. The content has to be inserted into the page.

Click one of the Language flags.

  4. Russian multilingual plugin DokuWiki

Create the page for the language for the flag you clicked. You can insert the same homepage text for each. You can use a translator like Google translate to create the initial page. The images to the right is what the page will look like in Russian and Korean.

    Korean multilingual plugin DokuWiki

Create the home pages for all the languages so that there is a page available for those who speak the particular language.

Important! Each page will need to be created individually The Multilingual Plugin only creates namespaces and does not translate your existing language into other languages.
