# How to Configure a Temporary Directory for Updating WHMCS

If you are receiving this error message: “*You do not currently have a path configured for temporary storage of files during updates.*“, you can follow this guide to learn **how to configure a temporary directory for updates in WHMCS**.

## Create Temporary Directory

First you will need to create the temporary directory.

1. [Log into the cPanel](/support/edu/cpanel/how-to-log-into-cpanel/)
2. Click the [File Manager](/support/edu/cpanel/using-file-manager-in-cpanel/) button, then navigate to the folder where you want to create the file.
3. Click the ** Folder** icon found in the top-left of the toolbar.
4. After clicking the icon, a popup box will appear for you to name the folder. For our example, we name the folder *tmp*. Click on the **Create New Folder** button once you name the folder.

## Configure Update Setting

Now that you have created the temporary directory, you will need to add this absolute file path to the *Update Settings for WHMCS*.

1. [Log into the WHMCS Administrative Dashboard.](/support/edu/whm/whmcs-login/)
2. Navigate to *Utilities > Update WHMCS*
3. Click the **Configure Update Settings** button.
4. Enter the path to the directory you just created into the *Temporary Path* field.
5. Click the **Save Changes** button.

**Congratulations!** Now you know how to *configure the Update Settings in WHMCS* to **set the temporary directory**.
