# How to create an image category in Phoca Gallery

After [installing Phoca Gallery](/support/edu/joomla/joomla-2-5/install/), the next thing we’ll do is make a category for our first set of images, animals. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the steps for creating an image category in Phoca Gallery.

**Creating categories in Phoca Gallery for Joomla 2.5:**

1. [Log into your Joomla 2.5 admin](/support/edu/joomla/joomla-3/how-to-log-in-to-administrative-dashboard/)
2. In the top menu, hover of **Components** » **Phoca Gallery** and then click **Categories**
3. In the top right menu, click **New**
4. While there are many settings you can adjust for this image category, the minimum requirement is a category title. So, enter a category name next to **Title** and then click **Save** in the top right menu.
