Thoughts on “How to Remove the WordPress Footer Branding

  • What happens when the theme updates? Wouldn’t my changes be lost? I’m no developer but the developers I do know have told me to never edit the theme directly.

    • If you update a theme directly, then changes would be lost when the theme is updated. Many customizable systems allow you to make changes in the WordPress customizer. Changes made directly there do not get removed during an update.

    • Unfortunately not. You must edit the template file. However, if you know a developer, there are ways to use JavaScript to edit elements on the page. But, this can be tricky. It’s always best to edit the template itself.

  • Hi,

I can only visible Editor Access, can’t see Editor option..Is it possible to change the footer code.

    • If you’re trying to change a WordPress Themes, then you should log in as an Administrator to the WordPress dashboard, and then go to Appearance. You can change the Theme there.

  • Hello,

I have a website with 2 languages (English & French). How to apply the update in the footer for 2 different languages page? I’ve updated in English page and the update works. But when I changed the page to the French page, the page which shows up is the English one, I can’t find the French one which consists of French texts. Any advices are really appreciated. Thank you in advance for the help!

    • The footer is not an element that can be modified per page. It’s either going to be English or French, throughout the entire site. You may be able to locate a plugin to establish multiple languages on one website, however, by default you will not be able to do this.

  • I am using sidney also. When I open the child theme in the editor, there is nothing listed in the theme files section, except the style.css and functions.php that were created when setting up the child theme. The only way to access the footer.php file seems to be through the parent theme. Have I missed something?

    • In the case of the child theme, you will need to create the files you want to edit and copy in the content from the parents. Or, you could copy and paste the file from the parent theme into the child theme and edit as needed.

  • Hello. I have done this and have had great luck with it. I’m currently running the Sydney theme. I do have a question for you, which I haven’t been able to get an answer for yet. I’ve changed my footer to cutomized text that I’d like to display and it works great, however, whenever the theme updates I have to go back in and correct it back to my customized text. Do you know if there is a way to avoid this?

    • Hello, I’m sorry to see the changes you are making are being overwritten during updates to your theme. I recommend creating a child theme to make these kinds of changes. This will allow the “parent theme” to update without overwriting the changes made to your “child theme”.

Following our guide, you can create a child theme, then make the modification as described in this article to the child theme. In this case, when you update the parent theme, the child theme will remain with the customization and not be overwritten (since the parent theme is receiving the update). I hope this helps!

  • This worked very well, but I find I have a forward slash “/” just above my new footer. I looked over the code with the object of removing it but couldn’t find this slash anywhere. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks for any suggestions!

    • Sorry for the trailing “/” – we’re not sure how that is happening. I would review the theme, or check out this article that goes through removing the attribution in the footer.

  • Hi, How would you do this with the Layers Parent theme and the LT Agriculture child theme? The layout is much different than shown here. Thanks!

    • It is likely that you will still need to edit the footer.php file. However, it’s possible that file is not in the main theme directory. It may be in a templates directory, or a “template parts” directory.

  • Excellent post! It was nice article. it would have saved me so much time! It was really helpful for me.

    • Hello Hamidah,

You can images by using HTML code (as per the location in the article above), or you can use a plugin. Here’s an example of one from the site: Insert Headers and Footers.

  • I tried making the above change but now my footer.php file not working and causes site to go down. Any assistance offered is much appreciated.

    • It is possible that one of the PHP tags was not closed or a similar syntax error occurred. I advise reverting the footer.php file to its former state, or restore the code from the default file from your theme. It is always best to make a copy of the file in its unedited state before editing the live copy.

  • How do I add a link inside the footer? This was great. Worked perfectly. Now, I’d like to make my website (jamesgangcreative) an active link. Is this an easy step?

  • HI, i looked in footer.php, but there is no text given to remove as it should be according to you.there mentioned only php coding but no text please help me

    • Have you tried adding footer code, and seeing if your page loads the content? If not, your theme may not display a footer by default.

  • how to change photomania footer text.? can you please help me out on this.. the steps that have mentioned doesnot work on this theme, so required your support.

    • I would suggest reaching out to the theme developers. Also, in the theme itself, look for a readme.txt file. Most themes contain them, and have instructions on how to perform most tasks.

    • The above method should work with any WordPress plugin that uses a ‘footer.php’ file. WordPress reserves ‘footer.php’ to act as the site’s footer. However, since WordPress is open-source it is possible to use a custom file. I advise checking your index.php file to see if the theme uses WordPress’s reserved footer tag or something different.

    • It looks like this theme has several customized templates. I advise checking with the developer to see which one they advise you edit.

  • Hi Bro, thanks so much for your reply, I did check the footer.php file, but i did not see it there. This theme :
