# Expired Domain Lifecycle: What Happens After Your Domain Expires

Miss your domain renewal date, and the clock starts immediately. Understanding the expired domain lifecycle gives you the best chance of recovering your domain before it falls into someone else’s hands or disappears entirely.

InMotion Hosting registers domains through Tucows, an accredited registrar. Once a domain leaves the renewal grace period, Tucows controls what happens next, and InMotion Hosting cannot override their policies. The timeline below reflects how Tucows handles expired registrations.

**Important:** Once a domain expires, you cannot renew it through the Account Management Panel (AMP). Contact InMotion Hosting Customer Service, available 24/7, for help recovering an expired domain.

## The Expired Domain Lifecycle

After your domain’s renewal date, it moves through four distinct stages. The window for low-cost recovery is short, so acting in the first 39 days is critical.

### Stage 1: Expiration grace period (days 1 to 39)

For the first 39 days after expiration, the domain is in the expiration grace period. InMotion Hosting can renew the domain during this window at no additional cost to you.

**Warning:** During the grace period, OpenSRS may list the domain for auction. If a third party purchases the domain at auction, you lose it and cannot renew it, regardless of how quickly you pay. Renewing the registration removes the domain from the auction listing.

**Important:** Once 40 days have passed, a third party can purchase the domain through auction as early as day 40. Do not wait.

### Stage 2: Redemption period (days 40 to approximately 70)

After the grace period ends, the domain enters the redemption period, which lasts approximately 30 to 35 days. Recovery is still possible during this stage, but an additional redemption fee is required in addition to the standard renewal price. **Important:** If the domain enters a live auction during the redemption period, the original registrant can no longer redeem it. Live auctions typically begin between days 40 and 45.

The length of the redemption period is set by Tucows and is not fixed or controlled by InMotion Hosting.

### Stage 3: Pending deletion (approximately 5 days)

Once the redemption period ends, the domain enters a pending deletion status for roughly five days. During this stage, the domain cannot be redeemed, transferred, or changed in any way. Recovery is no longer possible.

### Stage 4: Deletion (approximately days 60 to 90)

At the end of the pending deletion period, the domain is deleted from the registrar account. After deletion, it is released to the public and becomes available for anyone to register as a new domain. The exact deletion date varies and is not set or controlled by InMotion Hosting.
