Is it possible to install the pecl Imagick extension to php?

If not, is it preferable from a security point of view to invoke Imagemagick directly from php using exec(), shell_exec, system(), or something else?

Hello Jesseh,

Imagick - refers to the ImageMagick extension for PHP. This extension is already installed on the server. You can find more information on this issue by going to this article:

As far as I can see imagick isn't actually installed, on imagemagick. The link you provide points to an article "is imagemagick installed" which gives an example using exec to call convert. it specifically states that no APIs are installed. Any attempt to create new imagick object in PHP fails.

the overhead involved in calling convert from a php script is large and, for my purposes at least, impractical. I'd really appreciate it if the PHP extension could be installed.

Hello kimaldis,

ImageMagick is installed on our shared servers and can be run via PHP. However if you want the pecl Imagick to be installed, it would require a VPS server of better, due to it's intense resource requirement.

Also, if you are looking to edit images in a batch, I would recommend doing this on your local computer using Gimp (which is free, here is a helpful youtube video),or Photoshop (here is a youtube video for that). This is will stop you from affecting other people in a shared setting.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.
Thank you,
