I inserted a table for one of my pages and get this amount of space above it:

*BTW ("Pictures from the workplace" is where my table begins)
Any ideas why?

Without seeing the actual site itself, its difficult to determine what is causing it, but my guess would be that their is code inserted somewhere above it that is causing the additional line breaks. If not, there is probably something within the CSS of the theme that is pushing it further down the page.

The code inserted within the box looks fine so it looks the be isolated within the CSS of the theme itself. You may need to look through the CSS of your theme to identify the issue.
