Cpanel backup doesn't seem to be working.

I've been trying to make a backup through the cpanel, but it just hangs at the "Full backup in progress" screen. No matter how long I leave it open, a backup doesn't seem to be created. Suggestions?

Thank you for you question jngarff!

It appears you are exceeding the backup 3 gig limit. The backups will fail after 3 gigs. We suggest downloading your files to your local computer with FTP to maintain a full backup and export your databases with PhpMyAdmin.

Okay. Considering that ftp will take a considerable amount of time, how often would you recommend doing this (weekly, bi-monthly, monthly)? I've been told that you do have backups on your end, but that I should maintain my own as well as an extra precaution. What would you say is the norm?

We recommend keeping your own backups off site due to disk space reasons. You plan only has 40 gigs drive space. Our backups will run up to 10 gigs for free off site but after that the backups will stop running.

The duration of your backup will depend on how often your website is updated and how you store your data. If you are running a database driven site like wordpress, you may want to run a scheduled backup of the database. The files are not updated as much as the database so your database info can be saved more frequently.

In a nutshell, you will want to save your site as often as you update it. Some people run cron jobs that save their backups to a different ftp server.
