Lead Data Center Technician

InMotion Hosting is looking for a Lead Data Center Technician to help lead a team that is committed to providing highly reliable service and strong technical expertise in our Ashburn, VA Data Center. The Lead Data Center Technician will manage Data Center tickets, ensure server readiness, network maintenance, and assist with inventory.

What You’ll Do:

  • Resolve open issues while ensuring high uptime
  • Working with Centos and Ubuntu Linux on a daily basis 
  • Provide server maintenance including hardware upgrades and replacements
  • Rack and cable servers, documenting all changes to inventory
  • Act as an escalation point from data center technicians and systems
  • Determine the best approach to solve their issues, and educate them in understanding why
  • Mentor junior team members 
  • Meet shared quality and production standards for the data center group
  • Handle RMAs though the multiple vendors in a timely manner
  • Perform occasional checks on HVAC Systems, DC temperatures, power utilization, and “amber checks” for errors
  • Handle the hardware and initial software portion of Evacs when needed.
  • Ensure that the PXE server is kept up to date with the correct OS versions
  • Update scripts to ensure that all servers received the OS and updates that are needed based on server brand
  • Participate in on call rotation

What We’re Looking for:

  • Data Center experience providing hardware and comprehensive Linux support
  • Previous Team Lead or Supervisor experience is preferred
  • Expert level knowledge with Linux and its commands/utilities at a user level, handling Linux related issues where the server is inaccessible by standard remote access
  • Strong understanding of BIOS configurations, Linux runlevels, basic networking configurations, drive partitioning, RAID, and running file system checks 
  • Understanding of drive cloning, formatting, mounting, testing, and upgrade procedures 
  • Familiarity with RAM types (Standard, ECC, ECC-REG) and identifying for upgrades 
  • Advanced knowledge of postcodes and how to troubleshoot related issues
  • Familiarity with general networking concepts and switch/router hardware
  • Firewall experience (Cisco ASA, APF/CSF, iptables/ipchains), VPN configurations such as OpenVPN, IPsec tunnels, etc.
  • Experience ordering hardware while working within a budget
  • Strong understanding of the Web Hosting industry including, but not limited to cPanel, WHM, DNS, MySQL, PHP, Perl, Python, Ansible, and other such items
  • Shell scripting experience with BASH, Python or Perl
  • Understanding of how to build RPM packages or how to compile packages from source
  • Experience in Cloud computing and various Cloud computing architectures such as OpenStack is a plus 
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
