Tech Program Students at IMH

This week our Virginia office was very happy to host high school students from the Advanced Technology Center. The Advanced Technology Center offers a tech program for a variety of STEM interests. Programs offered include information technology and computer sciences, digital design and marketing, and engineering and manufacturing. We’ve partnered with the ATC over the years to provide insight into the business and the web design industry.

These students are hard at work creating a web design business from the ground up over the course of 9 months. They’re gaining hands-on experience not only with web design but also with marketing, sales, and financial management skills needed for a successful startup. Our Web Design and Sales teams gave great pointers to the students. But they also need to learn how to put all their skills into action. They will go on to craft their business model and create actual working sites for customers! Then, the group will also compete with other student-organized businesses across the country.

Best of luck to Blossom Web Design! Remember to always thrill your customers through exceptional service and show them what your business stands for.

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Position: Development Lead

Been with InMotion Hosting since: August 2007

How have you enjoyed working in the web hosting industry since starting at InMotion Hosting?

Before working at InMotion Hosting, I actually worked for about a year at another hosting company. Their infrastructure had quite a few problems, and so I got first hand experience on how not to run a web hosting company. When I came to InMotion Hosting, I was immediately surprised at how well everything was setup, and how smoothly operations ran. I’ve really enjoyed seeing first hand how putting the customer first helps a company profit and grow.

What is your current role at InMotion Hosting? What do you like most about it?

My current role with InMotion Hosting is Development Lead for the Product Development department. What I like most is the opportunity to work on all aspects of a product, not just development. Besides simply writing code, I get the opportunity to work on marketing and support. There’s a lot of potential in making our products very successful, and taking part in all aspects really helps to see the big picture and plan ahead.

What position did you start in with IMH? Tell us about your career growth since then.

I started at IMH in 2007 as a Tier1 in support. I moved on to Tier2 support, which gave me the opportunity to learn more about keeping servers running well, setting up and configuring VPS’s, and more. After that, I helped start the Training Department. I eventually moved on the helping start the Customer Community department, which focuses on writing great support tutorials for the website. Then, a little over 5 years ago, I was asked to help start the Product Development department, where our focus was on creating solutions to help WordPress users build and maintain WordPress websites.

Coolest gadget you own, want to own or have read about?

I’d like to get my hands on a nice oculus rift. I’m very interesting in VR and the possibilities that are there.

What would you like to tell us about yourself?

I feel very lucky to have joined InMotion Hosting. I was at the right time at the right place. It’s been rewarding to watch a small company grow to as big as it is today, and it’s been really fun learning and helping out with that growth wherever I can.

How have you used our Professional Development Program?

I attended a 2 day Agile / Scrum training session. It taught us a lot about how things should be done, “by the book”. We don’t run 100% agile, but we’ve been able to take pieces of what we’ve learned and apply it to our methods.
