Resource Usage Control with BetterLinux
On InMotion Hosting's newest shared server we utilize BetterLinux which is a collection of system resource management and monitoring tools for hosting providers.
Why use BetterLinux?
There are a multitude of things that can cause high system resource usage on a server, and typically the way to handle these spikes in usage would be to determine the responsible user on the server and then temporarily suspend that user's activity so it stops affecting the rest of the server's population.
On servers with BetterLinux, each user's resource usage can be better tracked and controlled by the system. So that if one user has a temporary spike in resource usage, the server can temporarily dedicate a limited amount of server resources to that user, while still allowing the majority of the system's resources to the other users on the server.
This can help stop bottlenecks, where for example if one user has a very intensive MySQL query that causes a lot of hard drive usage. The server can rate limit that user's query so it doesn't slow down all of the other simultaneous queries happening on the server.
